So this just happened to me today 11/28/23 on my brand new 4 month old 2023 4Runner. I went in the lock settings today to make some adjustments. My changes didn’t seem to take so I went back in and accidentally hit that volume button setting which I thought was defaulted to 7 and then blamo my fobs stopped working all together. Still trying to read through the 4 pages of this thread to see what I am going to do. Super annoying that Toyota hasn’t fixed this issue on new vehicles. Ugh!

This is BS, if they won’t refund you. Call Toyota corporate.

the difference of treatment you had versus me is quiet shocking. And I usually don’t have a great time at the dealership

dealership, explain them clearly showing them this thread or they won’t you.

otherzise some said it can be done with Carista (or the more expensive scan tools if you know someone with one)

Hanging around to see if this happens on a 2024 or if Toyota finally fixed this...Someone with a '24 needs to take one for the team and try reprogramming their remote.

Had this happened to me on my 23 limited after 24 hours of owning it. I turned off the key fobs so that it would not transmit a signal and both fobs stopped unlocking or locking the doors. I did move the locking settings but only after I noticed that the fobs were not working, and I noticed that when I would change the settings they would not register but would default back to the original settings. I can remote start the vehicle with the fob, but I can't unlock or lock it using them. Going to the dealer this weekend to get it fixed hopefully.

I order a Carista last night after I connected my BlueDriver which doesn’t allow you to make the fix as reported earlier in the thread. I will let everyone know what happens.

Where are you located, in case yours is fixed, and someone else in your area has the same issue?
    https://www.4runners.com/threads/5th-gen-psa.35024/

So it's obvious Toyota didn't fix the issue for the latest 2023 models. Hence the question about the new 2024 4R.

Appreciate you starting this thread! My 2021 4Runner had the same issue. I scheduled an appointment at my local Toyota dealer today and explained how that immediately after changing the vehicle unlock settings in the menu, it disabled the wireless functionality. The associate says he had not heard of it before, though when the tech scanned via techstream it showed that the wireless functionality was disabled. The tech also advised that I should not manipulate any settings after they restore the wireless functionality since there is no official fix or word from Toyota on the suspected bug. This is fine, and I am happy it was an easy fix, but this is on a vehicle under warranty only to be told don't change any settings that one should be able to change. This didn’t sit well with me since this has clearly been a problem for over a year and may get passed off until our warranties are expired. Regardless, I have sent correspondence to Toyota to see what is being done. I may also try to give them a call. I won’t hold my breath but will follow-up if I get any feedback! -Jon

PS I have attached a copy of their diagnostic printout and what settings they changed to get me back to factory settings.

I am the latest victim...same M.O. Adjusting lock settings and BAM! No more key Fob function. Ordered the Carista, should be here Monday. Going to try that before I go to dealer.

Ok so I received my Carista and was able to turn the wireless door locking function back on after purchasing a one month subscription for $9.99. I’m tempted to play around with the setting and see if I can break it again, but not sure I have the guts. :/

Do it lol! You have the tool to fix it now haha. With my one month of Carista I also turned off the seat belt chime and enabled the all windows down function from the fob.

It will probably have to be somebody that wasn't aware of the problem. Hopefully most people old enough to buy a brand new 4R know all about touching a hot stove.

Finally had a chance to do this. Man what an awesome little tool! Fixed the key fob Issue and tweaked all kinds of little things. I did the year subscription for $50. Worth it.

You'd think so, but...how many posts have we seen since this first came up in May '22?

Hopefully most are from people who didn't join up and read about it before purchase. Fortunately, I did a lot digging before choosing a vehicle because I prefer to learn from other people's misfortune instead of my own and I'm grateful for those who post their experiences, good and bad, with all aspects of the vehicle operation with and without modifications. That also goes for the handful of people who, despite having been around long enough to know the risks, are less cautious about mods that are known to not always work out easily (although I can't help shaking my head sometimes).

Looks like the customization options are bare bone. Not really much you can do based on what they show on their website.

I have Forscan for my F150. You can do almost anything with that. I wish there was something better than Carista out there for the 4Runner.

Same thing happened to my 23’ ORP. Annoying. Read this thread. Took it to Toyota the next day. Service tech said “we fix this issue for people all the time on the new 4Runners.” He confirmed the only way to fix it is the “tech stream” at the dealership. Took all of 10 minutes. After being fixed mine still plays the lock and unlock beep although I’ve read that’s not the case with others. I can adjust it as well without issue.

Has anyone here asked the car care nut about this issue? I am wondering what his response would be. I didn't even know that you can access the lock settings. How is that done?

How much would be charged by the dealership to fix this Key Fob Issues after standard factory warranty expires.
They would make a killing :)

Just want to add my '22 ORP has been flawless remote wise lock, unlock, remote start or proximity wise for like the rear hatch or passenger door. But I also haven't a seen reason to deviate from factory default settings so could that be the issue? I have a scanner capable of customizing these features but not sure if I want to nit & pick the particulars from the default settings without a good reason that is more than a minor irritation.

It seems to occur when changing the lock beep volume. Out of curiosity, what scanner do you have?

I have an Autel DS808K with the latest software but lock beep volume is something I could care less about which is why I don't see a need to stray from default settings. A minor irration at best.

I have the same issues, printed the papers from this thread and brought it to my dealership and they can't fix it. They said my wireless connection is on and the dealership has to wait for the foreman to be back after xmas to diagnose. FML.

Wonder if they just checked it and saw the status as on, or if they actually toggled it off and back on to at least try resetting it. GL man.

The key fobs issue is finally fixed. Technician at the dealership performed software update and both keys are now working (unlock and lock the car). This was done in December 2023 after xmas.

I was turned to this thread from one I posted about the lights below the side mirrors aren’t coming on with anything. I haven’t messed with the key fob settings and after reading this thread I don’t think I want to.
