2020 TRD Pro PCS Pre Collision System Malfunction

I'm thinking something maybe wrong with it. It's going to the shop anyway for the front end damage, so I'll have them look at it.

 

It does... How I found out is one day I was driving downtown here in Houston, and one old guy decided to suddenly pull out in front of me and he stopped (with what I believe was panic). Before I could even slam on the brakes, the truck stopped for me. The not so nice thing is it felt like it almost broke my neck! Lol!

Cool. Thanks. I called my local Toyota dealer and they told me to call Toyota first before I take it to a repair shop. Waiting for a call back from the case manager.

 

The auto braking can’t be relied on to actually prevent an accident. The owner’s manual states that it won’t prevent every collision, and lists out various ways in which the systems/sensors can be fooled into not intervening when it should, or intervening when it shouldn’t. At best, Toyota’s official line is that may reduce the severity of a collision.

In your case it sounds like it recognized a need (brake warnings) but hadn’t met some threshold to apply braking yet. You can adjust the sensitivity of the system in the instrument information screen. I would guess if it’s more sensitive, then there is more potential for false positives. That’s why I have my sensitivity on low, because I worry more about the risk of it to activating unnecessarily.

 

Anecdotal experiences in my family… I had complained about an emergency braking system on one of our three cars at the time. ultimately that car did have an acciden that I have captured on dash cam with audio. Toyota was slimy about the experience... at the time I inquired with lawyers but nobody wanted to bring it on because they were just too small and they wanted me to bring others into the fold who shared the experience. Why would I be doing all that work for a law firm on a class action?

Mine does not automatically apply the brakes, it just warns the driver.
(Unlike my wife's 2021 Corolla SE which does automatically apply the brakes)

The only time my 4Runner has automatically applied brakes is when Adaptive Cruise Control is engaged and the car in front of me slows down. When the radar catches this the rig slows down to match their speed. Without Cruise Control engaged it has not automatically applied the brakes to avoid a collision.

 

FYI… been 1.5 years and no issue
