5th gen or 6th gen or Land Cruiser

The new Land Cruiser has gotten SO much bad press and negative feedback, that I think they'll change/upgrade the power train for the 2026 year. Hopefully, Toyota will wise up and put the V6 in it.

They're not changing the drivetrain. They might do some fine tuning, though.

I haven't heard much actual user feedback, but I suspect it's not really as bad as the YouTube media makes it sound.

 

They can't change it after one year without looking like they got caught phoning it in, and the supply chain for 2026 is already well underway since we are only 6 months away from 26 MY production starts to get on the ship and be delivered by early fall. Plus all the certification with the US Feds can't be rushed.

Any change will come for maybe the 28MY.

 

I don’t anticipate much changing about the LC Prado other than Toyota shifting production volume and a higher price to the GX550. It’s turned into a marketing game to squeeze as much money as possible from buyers.

 

True, if the anticipated LC250 buyers migrate up to the GX then expect another sizeable price bump next year on the GX550.

 

I think if sales tank due to the 4Runner and GX that they will just kill off the LandCruiser again.

 

I concur, how many folks are going to get in the driver's seat with direct driving experience from a 200-series and expect what Jason Cammisa called "effortlessness"? (I think)

I heard at least some of what he meant when the hood was open but in any other 0-60 video, it sounds like a 4-cylinder to me.

 

Get a 5th Gen. Anyone who argues is crazy

If one wants a V6, Toyota has more expensive vehicles to sell you.

 

Compare parts availability and cost…..Grenadier and 4Runner.

 

The prices for the new vehicles are just outrageous to me.....and they don't seem to have any signs to go any lower or even stabilizing. I have wondered around looking online for the GX and the Landcruiser and then....I say...why pay these figures when the 5th Gen is barely broken in at 60K. So I am staying put for several more years with blue tank.

 

Being seen at the little league games, work parking lot and garage, and church in a latest gen 4R is a status symbol to white collar workers these days. Never underestimate people's desire to look "4Runner smart".

 

When I was younger Gen 3 4Runner Limiteds and J80-J100 Land Cruisers were stealth wealth vehicles in my area. They were always there but they never stood out.

 

I know the "stealth wealth" thing has been making its rounds on social media last few years, but those vehicles were always known as expensive, everyone who ever stepped inside a Toyota dealership and window shopped window stickers would know that the Land Cruisers were 3+ times the price of contemporary Camrys and 4-5 times the price of Corollas. The 4Runners were not far behind.


When I was younger the truly well off people I knew, as in people who invested well and didn't have to work past age 40 or so, drove around in normal cars like Avalons, Civics and Accords, they considered the likes of Land Cruisers to be unnecessary and ostentatious humble brags. The real stealth at the time was XLE Camrys and Avalons with interior that looked like Benzes but exterior looked like any other car. Even the LS400 was considered cars for dentists who had to keep a day job

 

Yes. But the people in my area weren’t overextending themselves just to look cool. And they certainly weren’t built out like the mall crawlers you see now. They were mostly stock and bland looking.

Or a 2021 Land Cruiser with an even less optional mpg than a 4Runner?

 

the LC250/hybrid 4Rs will probably get a bit better mileage around town, but we will have to let those with the hybrid drivetrain verify.

On the highway, it's going to depend on how one drives. Once that turbo spools all bets are off.

 

The Land Cruiser was such a low volume vehicle I doubt even 95% of the buying populace knew it existed.

 

Base Ineos only has center locker.. you need to spend about $80k to have a good set of options.
But yes, i stopped by the Toyota dealer to check out the 250. After the visit, stepping back into my Ineos feels like a multi-tier upgrade.

the 250 is such sht, from a touch n feel perspective - 1948 and LC trims both felt underwhelming af.

if you want a vehicle to keep for life. The Ineos is a much riskier bet than the Toyota.. but if you want excitement and standout on the streets, for a few years, and can afford the depreciation hit, when you sell, go with Ineos no doubt. Nothing like it on the market. Closest to driving a $200k defender restomod

 

The fact that the Ineos uses the Supra motor and the ZF 8 speed provides some confidence to the powertrain.

As to the rest, sure, you do take a risk. But at the end of the day in the US, you can buy this, or a bloated LX700H Overrail for about 115k plus options and markups. I guess pick ye poison.

 

Oh for sure! the lx700h is not appealing at all.

Jeep rubicon is in up there capability-wise.. in fact, I’d rather get wrangler 392 than an lx700h. The Lexus is low key af, imagine spending $120k, and you get zero bragging rights, and indistinguishable from karen who bought a $25k lx570… lol

People say Jeep are sht.. but there are certainly tons of them out tackling trails, so who knows.. if you don’t need lifetime ownership… get a rubicon for a few seasons

Either a 5th gen or a GX550 if you’re considering the Landcruiser

 

You can be as sure as sunrise whenever you post on this forum asking "5th gen or [literally anything released after 2009]" that the answer will be 5th gen. 5th gen will always be the answer. People act like the 1GR was the 2nd coming of Christ in engine form.

If you want the 6th gen T4r or LC, I'd hold off a year. Even the engine that parted the ocean for Moses (according to this forum), the 1GR, had some minor problems with head gaskets and timing cover leaks early on. I will point out the I4 hasn't had any main bearing failures like the V6 engine in the Lexus (which was a manufacturing process defect, not a design flaw of the engine itself).

I'd take the 6th gen T4r over the new Land Cruiser, the Land Cruiser costs a lot more for some features I don't think most people will see the benefit of. I do think the LC looks better, but that is the eye of the beholder.

The 6th gen cost increase over a 5th gen is substantial, but look at a 3rd gen window sticker and adjust for inflation, they were never inexpensive. The price increase is a return to normal, the 5th gen price came from over a decade of production. The price of the higher trims has risen more than I think reasonable. You pay more, but you get more, whether that more is what you want is a matter of opinion.

 

If the turbo 4 ends up being a reliable engine, nobody is going to miss the 1GR.

Agreed. It's been a solid engine, for sure. But, it's almost like everyone has forgotten all of the complaints about fuel economy and power.

 

Tru dat.. after one test drive in the grenadier, my new 23 ORP was relegated to the “donation pile”. all I could think about was why I am not owning a grenadier…. After buying into the grenadier mindset, everything else on the market is boring af.

This vehicle gets as much attention as a Ferrari
