With all the extra weight from the 34s and armor I decided to reach out to Alex at Overland Tailor Tuning.

He flashed the ECU and improved drivability quite a bit. The rig had improved shift logic, more low end torque and better throttle response.

Silver felt faster and more responsive than ever even with the 34s and extra weight.


Even the wife was very impressed with how responsive the rig felt in comparison.

 

Played in the mud a bit at Merus.
Not going to let the weather ruin our fun

 

One of the rigs in our group slashed a tire. We stuffed 14 plugs in the thing to get it back to camp.



A Tacoma broke a sway bar link which nearly slashed his CV boot. Tied the sway bar up out of the way and kept running the trail.

Recovered two vehicles that were stuck in the muck. One with the winch, and one with a kinetic rope.

It was one hell of a muddy mess out there but we still had a ton of fun

 

Decided to invest in a proper roof rack. I’ve been rocking the LFD cross bars for a while. Wanted something a little more capable so I decided on a Sherpa Crestone Sport.

After removing the front sway bar I started rubbing in the front during articulation. I got pretty tired of pushing the fenders back in and fixing the panel gap after every wheeling trip...





I had a few choices.
I could just remove the wheel spacers, but it seemed that wide stance really helped with off camber situations.
I could reconnect the sway bar, but during normal driving I could barely notice it was gone. And off road it made a huge difference.

To make it work I decided to chop the fenders. C4 fabrication sells a high clearance fender liner kit that I decided to pull the trigger on. This kit would not only solve the rubbing issue, it would also lower my chances of ingesting water since the viper cut and fender liner trimming exposed the air intake underneath the passenger side fender.

Here’s how it turned out





Installed some apex chassis tie rods as well since I’ve seen a few bend under stress.

 

Added some storage bags to the Molle panels in the back.

After a year of abuse that rear bash bar was looking like, well... a bash bar.
The side hoops had saved my quarter panel multiple times so all the paint was scrapped off and left on various rocks and canyon walls. So I decided to give it a fresh coating of Raptor liner.





Also added some splash guards underneath to keep mud from building up inside the bumper. Built them out of some 3/16" ABS

Too much mud gets on those the radar sensors and the rig starts freaking out.



Got the bash bar looking new again.

 

Noticed the Dobinsons rear springs started to sag a little too much with the added weight and gear I keep in the rig.

Swapped the 675’s out for 677’s and got some rake dialed back in.













These have the same spring rate but are about one inch longer. Also threw in a 3/4” spacer on the rear driver side to correct the Toyota lean.

 

Buttoned up a couple other details as well.

Adjusted the Apache OffRoad rear sway bar links and Dobinsons panhard bar to accommodate the new rear springs.

Chopped the exhaust and reinstalled my awning onto the new roof rack.

 

Got excited for a new spring option and pulled the trigger on it!

Apache just released 650lb spring with 395mm free height. The CF220.

I've been on Dobinsons C59-352 front springs since I switched to Dobinsons. These are a 730lb spring with 385mm of free height. I have about 200lbs of front weight added. On the street they were a little stiff, but very controlled and manageable. Off road is really where I felt over-sprung. Alas, I had my 3" of lift, so I decided to live with it.

Once I saw this spring option release I reached out to Apache, verified fitment, and placed the order.

Had a chance to install them last weekend. Here’s how it went.

Disconnected the LCA from the spindle and dropped the coilover out from the bottom. Disassembled with spring compressors.





Realized the spring compressor I had would not work with the new springs… so I improvised. I’ll admit, this was about as sketchy as it looked. But it worked like a charm.


Got the coilovers reinstalled and went on a test drive!


Measured at all four corners and noticed I still had a bit of Toyota lean in the back… despite adding a 3/4” spacer to the driver rear spring a few weeks ago.

My buddy lent me a 1.25” lean correction spacer for that rear spring. Figured I’d go ahead and get it over with. Out with the 3/4” spacer and in with the 1.25”!



Every time I fiddle with these extended travel springs I’m reminded how much of a PITA they are compared to regular length rear springs…

Been driving on this setup for about a week now. Toyota lean is gone and I’m sitting at about 3.5” of lift. Rides fantastic with these lighter duty front springs!

 

Finally got my riser kit from Aiden James customs. Placed this order damn near 10 months ago!







Install was simple and I’m a big fan of the slide out tables. Certainly a good upgrade from the basic riser kit I built out of plywood a while back!

 

Very cool build. You got some skills and abilities with all the stuff you have done to the 4R. Keep it coming boss!

This is a great read and thank you for all of the tips! I know the sizes are different - but which tires did or do you prefer? The Nitto's or the Falken's? Did you also do a Viper cut?
I'm in South Carolina via Keller, Tx.

That gun range wouldn't happen to be Quail Creek of I35 would it?

 

Hard to say about the tires. They both had pros and cons.
The Ridge Grapplers were slightly better in the mud. But the beefy sidewall on the Falkens was a big selling point. On dry pavement they're similar, but on wet roads the advantage goes to the Falkens. Tread wear is better on the Falkens as well. I'll likely move to 35" Baja Boss A/T on the next set.

I won't post which range it is since I'm a frequent customer and would like to preserve some semblance of anonymity.

Yes I had a bumper cut done. It's not quite the usual high viper cut (I'm not a big fan of that look personally.)
Just needed the extra clearance for the 34's and wheel spacers. It also helps a lot with obstacles. See post #20
