Metal oil filter housing

Thanks for that info. We live in a rural area and take our trash to a drop of area. So taking oil there is not an inconvenience. But good info to know.

 

the Fumoto valves are extremely reliable. The dealer service department, not so much.

 

Yes, just push down on the tube and compress the spring, turn in either direction until the tabs to clear. Pops right out. No need to bend anything.
Metal housing feels a lot smoother screwing on and off the engine too.

 

I don't know if I dare let the dealership change my oil now that I have a Fumoto valve. In fact, when I wasted my time taking my runner in for its free 5k service, I told them I had already changed the oil and installed the valve, all they could focus on was how I may be voiding my warranty.

 

Exactly. I'd be concerned that the teenage 'oil tech' would remove that newfangled drain gizmo instead of just turning the handle to drain the oil...at least when I take mine to a mechanic, I can explain that it has a different setup. You never get to speak with the person who works on your vehicle at the dealership.

How do you void the warranty by changing the oil more often? Or were they saying you were voiding the warranty by not having them change the oil?

 

All depends on the skills of the Oil Change Tech. Best to avoid express dealership oil change services before and working hours.

My first oil change was done by a young tech.... left all the undercarriage and skid plate covered with oil. Whilst trying to cut corner.

Didn't realize until i got home and my garage floor was covered with oil spots.

 

because I installed the valve. Basically, they are saying if I lose the oil because of the valve, I have no warranty recourse. I didn't waste my time discussing it with them. And remember, while under Toyota Care oil changes are every 10k, even though the vehicle has 5000 things reminding you to change it every 5k, so they wouldn't have change it unless I payed them anyways.

Our local dealership was taken over by a corporation a few years ago, and I hear lots of complaining about them now.

 

this now appears to come without the drain cap/plug? anyone buy recently?

 

Not sure if it ever came with the drain cap/plug. I figured those who got one just swapped the metal cap from the plastic filter housing.

It certainly appears to be genuine Toyota from an actual Toyota parts supplier, but a lot of folks are leery of "genuine" Toyota parts from Amazon...

I have the Fumoto on my 2020 since it’s first oil change 60k miles ago without any leaks. I’ve also had it on my WRX throughout its 250k life without leaks as well. Good upgrade.

Re. the metal oil filter housing upgrade. Not sure if it’s been mentioned already but I’d watch this if you haven’t already before making that upgrade. There’s more to that housing standpipe assembly than meets the eye. That spring at the bottom of the standpipe is a calibrated pressure relief valve. Having learned that I’m not messing around taking it apart. I’m just sticking with my original plastic filter housing. I just use a torque wrench and a good filter wrench like MotivX for oil changes.

Looks like you don't even have to remove the pipe in the middle as Amazon says that it fits the 4runner, is this true?

 

The metal housing is 100% a feel good mod in my opinion. Over the last 10 years we have owned several Toyota vehicles with the cartridge style filter. 50+ oil changes later and I have yet to see any issues with the composite filter housing. The o-ring on the outside of the housing is what creates the seal and it only needs to be gently snugged up.

 

AMD is wrong with the coil spring, which is just there to press the filter against the inlet, to accommodate variations in filter height. The bypass valve or pressure relief valve is a wave spring-backed steel disc at the base of the center tube, visible when you separate the tube from the cap and look at the bottom. When you transfer the factory center tube to the aluminum cap, the factory bypass valve is transferred over as well.



The bypass valve has a high duty cycle, as it opens every time you get on the gas before the oil reaches operating temp (~first 20 minutes of driving).

 

Interesting. So what’s the coil spring for? I thought the disc was to release oil through the drain at the bottom of the filter housing, and the coil was for the bypass.

 

^The coil spring is just there to press the filter against the engine filter adapter inlet, to accommodate variations in filter height as they can vary amongst different batches and different brands.

The check valve for draining the filter housing is built into the housing.

BTW if you want a laugh, look up the MSRP for the oil cooler. Toyota figures if that thing fails, you'd need a new engine, and priced it accordingly.

 

Agree. 185k miles on the original housing on my 2013 and no issues. My 233k miles '07 Volvo has the same setup, plastic housing, and no issues. I don't get the obsession with changing this part.

 

I have valvomax.
It does not have a ball shutoff valve like the others. It has a screw valve that you need to attach when changing the oil...
