    Glad it ended well.

(The following is not directed at you, it's just my dealership hate coming out).... I wonder how the first tech would explain why he said oil spilled in the starter since he would have had to have seen oil for it to have spilled into the starter (if that's even possible).

What a great and swift end to this story. So glad the induced starter failure didn't take anything else out. Now you can enjoy your weekend and your 4Runner.

Glad to hear 4runners are still good, or at least those without dealership installed alarms.

Now get those raptor lights out before they cause your next issue. Ok, just kidding.

All manufacturers need to start offering vehicles directly from the factory. Screw the dealers.

Why the fuck dealers bother to install stuff like that I wouldn’t want the car even with it removed.

Some types of smoke under the hood can cause damage to cad plating on brackets and fasteners. Have a look.

My cynical side thinks they hope they will fail spectacularly in the future, which gives the dishonest places another opportunity to make money off of trusting customers.

I have 20 years body shop, insurance and mechanic experience. I hate to say it but you will likely have other issues with this truck at some point.

If it smoked the starter, it definitely overheated the large gauge cable going to the starter. Also several components like fuses and any wiring related to the starting system should be suspect.

Hate to say this, but I would be trading this vehicle in so fast. It will never be the same. Especially if you can still smell smoke/burning smells. That smell sticks to everything and takes a long time to go away, if ever.

Glad to hear that you can drive it again. My strong recommendation is to get this inspected by independent shop, so you can be sure it was properly fixed. Electrical fire could have easily damaged other electrical components and simply replacing the starter, if that what they did, almost certainly would not be enough.

So really, when we buy a new car, we need to first take it to a trusted independent mechanic for a PPI. That sucks.

Glad it’s all figured out. I hope you don’t have future problems from this screw up.

Care to share the name of the dealership that spilled the oil? I’m in So Cal and would like to know who to avoid.

My guess is that dealership isn't any better or worse than any other dealership - of any brand. Most dealers have two service areas - the one where all the "real" mechanics with the training, certification and nice tools work on the cars; doing actual repairs (okay, swapping parts). And then there's the other side - the side where the only qualification is not having a recent DUI. The "QuickLane" or similar is an entirely different animal. Managers figured out years ago they can't make money having trained technicians change oil. So instead, we get cross-threaded drain plugs, forgetting to replace the drained oil... and oil dumped on starters.

The OP's dealership actually sounds better than average - how they resolved the issue... well, so far.

This tracks with what I heard about one of our local dealers. They have high school students come in from auto-shop to get experience and change oil on customer cars, unpaid of course. Only heard it from one person and received no real details so take it with a grain of salt.

To make extra money. The same thing with the window etching and ceramic detailing and all the other add-ons they can do. It makes them MONEY.
They do the glass etching for about $30 and charge $499
They do the immobilizer alarms for about $130 and charge $999
They do everything they can to maximize their return on every sale. If you look at vehicles a lot, you would have noticed this in/around 2021, dealers started adding all sorts of crap to vehicles on the lot so that every time they sold one it had more "fluff" and they made more profits. People were buying vehicles left and right, didnt care about the price, just as soon as it hit the lot they were buying them without even thinking about the price. Dealers were adding in all sorts of stupid "fluff" to make more profits and raking in big bucks. They didnt stop doing this "fluffing" after things started slowing down, if anything they started looking for more stuff to add in.

Keep all your documentation as if you have any more electrical issues I would point at this issue. Glad it's fixed.

All dealers do this now as soon as it rolls of the truck when they do the pre delivery inspection they have the techs hack up your wiring and add a karr alarm or some other stupid bullshit so when you come buy the car and say he I don’t want it they’re like nope sorry we already installed it you don’t have to pay for the subscription but we will still charge you 1200 for the unit

Hmm. Toyota is bankrupt? You’d think that’d be reflected in the stock chart.

Nope. Dealers don't use in-house techs for aftermarket parts. Alarms and trackers are installed (butchered) by the lowest bidder stereo shop. Spacer lifts and bumpers/racks are put in by a local 4WP.

your splitting hairs as soon as it rolls off the truck it gets hacked up at the dealership they’re not taking it to the stereo shop the tech is on site and even if they used their actual dealer techs those guys can’t even do an oil change properly let alone wiring so it would be fucked up no matter what
