    This happened to me on relatively steep inclines in my 2018 4Runner (e.g. stopped on a hill in the SF Nob Hill area) and I found it annoying at stoplights and wondered why it was happening, and thought that something could be actually faulty on my vehicle such as a certain sensor, etc. I haven't yet driven on such hills in my 2023 4Runner, but I'm curious if the behavior will be any different and I'll report back if there is any difference.

    Well, for what it's worth, I just went on a hill where I experienced the "brrrrrr" before and my 2023 behaved exactly the same way as my 2018 did, so it wasn't a faulty or hypersensitive sensor...

    My driveway is a hill. I leave from it all the time from a dead start. No issues.

    I just picked up a 2018 Limited and it does the exact same thing on a hill - slip indicator lights up and the truck shakes as it rolls back, kinda feel like ABS shake.

    So I'm confused, is this the intended function or should this be fixed?

    I've owned other cars with hill assist, and none of them operate like this.

    I have to yield on a steep hill as I leave home. Avoiding the described behavior is a two-foot operation - hold the brake and hit the accelerator just as you're releasing it. Not a lot different than using a handbrake with a manual on an uphill.

    It’s all they can do without a electronic parking brake and it does keep you from stalling the engine for a time.

    Are you guys complaining the same guys they make brake hold for on manuals? Or would you even attempt to drive a manual?

    It happened to me once when I first got the car. After that I just... hit the gas faster when starting on hills

    My friend and I both have a 2024 4runners and they both do the exact same thing as the OPs issue. We both have stored messages in our infotainment system under "Vehicle Alert". The message says that it's a vehicle stability control system malfunction, see pic. Both of our throttles cut out when this happens so 2 footing it is a must or roll into whoever is behind you. The first time this happened to me, I was stopped on a pretty steep hill at a stop sign, and, when I let off of the brake pedal and attempted to accelerate, the brakes held for a quick second as they are supposed to. I then started rolling so I hit the gas....to late! This is what set all of the "safety " systems into a tizzy. The brakes did "attempt" to stop the truck in a very hurkey-jerky manner but I continued to roll backwards until I finally realized that my gas pedal wasn't doing anything and I hit the brakes. Now I know better. Quite sure the dealer will say this is "normal".20240812_192926.jpg

    Look at the 12/12 date and time. More than likely factory testing, not what you encountered.

    If you live near each other, maybe take both vehicles to the same dealership at the same time and let them have a look. Perhaps they could do some comparing. It's always easier to diagnose a problem when there's more than one example in front of you.

    Yup, my 2024 had 3 alert messages including this one, all dates before I bought the rig. I've had what OP is talking about happen on a some dirt inclines, there's no alerts from those dates.

    If I'm stopped on a steep hill, it's just second nature to "two foot" it. Not doing so just seems like asking for a problem and blaming the vehicle. Assuming I have two feet, what's difficult about it?

    The funny thing is that the alert was not there before this happened, it appeared afterwards. I received a second alert that appeared about two months after a close call on the Pa turnpike for the pre collision system, and it has the same 12/12 date and same time. I'll have to trigger another alert after I delete the current ones and see what date pops.
