I did the Subaru tweeter swap as well. I am not an audiophile but I noticed a cleaner/crisper sound. Some complain they sound tinny but I did not experience that at all. The actual units themselves appear to be much better quality. Direct replacement, 10 minutes and done.

No non JBL. The stock speakers are just paper, the Sub/Kicker speakers feel and look well made.

I also did the Subaru tweeter upgrade in my 2021 Off Road and am pleased with the sound improvement.

That said, I’m not an audiophile and also unwilling to spend big bucks on a sound system but the $80 I spent on the new tweeters improved the system enough that I’m happy with it.

Also, they are a direct replacement and are easy to swap in about 10 minutes or so…..

    Cheers,
    Bob

I also did the plug and play dash speaker swap. Definitely sounds better now, but it makes me realize how bad the door speakers are, the bass is so muddy. I am thinking about replacing the door speakers, there are some decently priced 6x9s on Crutchfield that would surely be an improvement. It is nice they include the brackets and wiring harness for free. I notice most folks mention they go with a component system with just woofers in the doors, but I can't see where it would hurt to put some 2 way speakers in there instead. If down the road I end up adding an amp, I will probably be glad to have the extra tweeters in the doors.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I have a 2019 TRD Pro w/ JBL and the swap to the Subaru tweeters are not plug and play, in fact it's a different connector entirely. Does the TRD Pro have a different dash speaker? I can upload pictures in a bit. Does anyone have a true plug and play recommendation? Unfortunately, after a small trip from home where my 4runner was parked in the sun, my driver side tweeter got cooked.

The Subaru tweeters are not plug-n-play on the JBL system.

Subaru tweeter replacement is not plug and play with 4Runner jbl system. Clip on jbl system has a clip in center that does not allow Subaru tweeter to plug in. Disappointing but fact. On to the next replacement

Also, are the speakers the same impedance? Usually drop in upgrade tweeters having higher sensitivity ratings throwing off the balance-tweeters too bright.

Yeah it's been known for a while and there is a solution but I don't remember what. The JBL system just makes things complicated.

Yeah just disappointed that the jbl system has not matched the sound quality I had in my 07 sr5 4Runner. I bragged about how decent, imo, the sound system was in a base model truck. I thought when I purchased the 18 limited the sound system would be the same or better than the 07. Oh well, I guess Toyota didn’t want to create the perfect beast.

Completed the upgrade on my 19' SR5 and after readjusting the EQ its a noticeable improvement..

I had the same experience in my Taco but they settle in nicely after some play time. I was not impressed the first day. The only reason I like them is they're plug and play and don't mess with the factory setup. Otherwise I'd be doing Infinity tweeters too, they were awesome in my Jeep.

So the Subaru tweeters don’t fit the Limited models with JBL. What’s the solution? Is there a wiring adapter or similar?

So these would work in a limited as long as the provided adapter is used? Since I’m in Canada these show as $110 vs the kickers being sub $90..

    Was the change worth it?

I can’t comment on if it’s better than the limited jbl speakers. They should work with the provided adapter you will just have to crimp the wires together.

These are 4 ohm tweeters, stock JBL are 2 ohm. The levels won't be the same. That being said you may like the sound.

I wish I could find some
Tweeter pods/enclosures that look oem so I could build a nice 3 way setup… I might just go 2-way with a 2.5” speaker and 6 or 6x9 for the doors
