When to Regear??

I have more faith in Toyota 4Runner build quality then the Jeep Wranglers. And my Wrangler was perfectly fine rolling on 37s. And I'm just running tiny 34s on the 4Runner

 

@Yotaholic dude eat a slice of humble pie for once, 34's aren't crazy on a Jeep but 34'd aren't tiny on 5th Gen 4R, look around.
I have some clunking I don't know which bushing(s) or connection(s) are being worn out. I get suspicious humming like my wheel bearings are being worn, I've had bellows and boots fail, I had my passenger tie rods fail and come apart at the threads (drivers side jam nut had began loosening itself as well). And I don't know what else I don't know yet.
Big tires, added weight, mods, KDSS, then wheeling and highway trips have a different effect on 4R's compared to wheeling and highway running a factory 4R.

 

Tiny, no? Looks a stock 4Runner to me

 

You have small 34's to begin with

Load E is nice and thick tho

A measly 33.8, probably pressed to like 32 underneath the truck.

 

Drove on a horrible trail yesterday, and I was fully prepared for a flat tire or two, but the Load E did its job

 

Nice I agree, I have never got as much as even a leak. and I have 2 nails and a legit lag bolt in them, right now.

I have read in research lately that load E's have their drawbacks when wheeling as well which I didn't fully consider but ya

 

Simple solution: If the road is too rough, then you just need to drive faster to get on top of it.

 

Then you risk breaking other things

Regearing will absolutely improve performance. And, It can actually improve fuel economy by allowing the transmission to operate in overdrive with less downshifting required.

 

Not gunna do that with my 5100's!

 

Not a big deal unless absolutely necessary in case of 37s

 

I think it depends on the specific tire. My load range E 295 MT's ride like pillows compared to my load range C 285 AT's.

I feel sorry for anyone googling re-gearing at 4runner forums and finds this thread. No way to salvage it at this point IMHO.

Plenty of options to really send things sideways here.

On my 5th tank of gas since the last reset and its in the high 19s now on 33s. But I have nitro 4.88s in storage

 

Are your supercharged? Only guessing since you have a afr gauge.

 

Yeah, waiting for my mpg to drop but it wants to stay at 19.8. It’ll be a couple months until i get the 4.88 installed and probably 34’s

 

Final two cents. Looks like regearing is beneficial to anyone running a 33" tire and up.

If you normally have a heavy payload, you're towing, or you live in a mountainous area and want to run anything above 33" tires, regearing is damn near mandatory IF you want to maintain some decent performance.

When I make the move to 34s, a regear to 4.56s will be following shortly.

*Final note: Power adders aside, I think we should fix the problem at it's source. If the car is slow because you've effectively geared the car out of it's efficiency range; REGEAR IT. Tunes and superchargers help with the lack of power. But If you're going to be running a 34s or 35s moving to 4.56 gears will correct your ratios and improve your driving experience in almost every way.

 

I'm glad you were able to get some good info. You have drawn the right conclusion.

 

Nitro doesn't even seem to list 4.56 as a recommendation. 5.29 and 32's sounds fun
