Was rear ended in a hit and run. Wondering if I may be able to fix it myself. Does this look fixable

@Redwood thank you for mentioning that I had no idea. I looked it up could it perhaps be this? If so it is listed as the reverse sensor. I don’t have any issues with the back up camera and my 21 never had any sort of warning sounds not sure about newer 4Runners.

 

No it's not just a sensor but a module with like 12 wires in the connector. Doesn't look like #19 on your parts diagram. Don't believe it's connected with the rear camera. I've been leaning to it possibly being the smart key receiver for rear hatch unlock/window functions but not sure. Are you push button start?

 

Looks like that may have been added on the 22 model. Found this on another thread.

 

Quite possible as I said i wasn't sure what it was. But yes my "22 has BSM and RCTA. Could be part of the RCTA. My point is get under that corner and look. No module no worries.

 

@Redwood Checked and no module. The electrical harness only goes to the tail lights, at least as far as I can tell without taking off the bumper.

The bumper comes off, and more importantly the crush bar and it's mounts come off - because you use the frame holes behind that to fish in a nut plate for two 17mm bolts.
Lucky me right?! I actually have enjoyed taking bumpers off.
On non KDSS trucks, you unbolt the sway bar and sandwich the recovery point underneath on each side.

You forgot the part about swearing because you unbolted both sides of the swaybar brackets.

Ya so I didn't have unbolt my sway bar, BUT, the KDSS cylinder and beefy sway bar get in the way of drilling 1 of two holes on either side that I must drill out. Hence my delays.

That's a fun time. Happened with my sliders when my neighbor showed up to see what I was doing and then basically installed them single handily.

Except I don't do fluid changes, YET!

Like most men I tend to also ignore instructions until I've wasted a sufficient amount of time going in the wrong direction. Like when I removed the crush bar for the first time, and first unbolted 6 nuts what were not necessary

 

I have an actual diagnosis of ADD, so at least I have an excuse for some of my boneheaded moves.

 

Ughhh, sorry this happened to you. Some people are just selfish, irresponsible children in adult bodies.

When stuff like this happens to me (vet bills from irresponsible dog owner’s demon dog attacking mine, finding damaged car in parking lot, etc), the reality that I’m fortunate enough to fix the issue without losing sleep while that other person had to stoop to being an immoral, panicked, responsibility-evading ass gives me perspective not to get too upset.

In your case, you probably came out pretty cheap….if not ahead of you use it as an opportunity to go with the black valences lol. Awesome that the bumper just snapped in and didn’t deform or lose a bunch of clips.

Outside of the electronics in the bumper, my big concern would be with the trailer ball taking most of the impact. While that may have saved you expensive body damage, hopefully it did not translate to any bent medal associated with the hitch itself.

 

@TheGreekFreak Thank you I worked on it today and was able to install the front and back black valences. Luckily I did not see any big surprises, here are update pics, not perfect but good enough.
