On mine, you can select how sensitive you want before the headlights turn on. On the most sensitive setting , they’ll turn on automatically if it’s overcast. So most definitely if it rains enough to be a safety concern, you can have the light automatically turn on

Sorry, I’m in the camp of if you don’t want to turn on your headlights yourself when it gets dark, you have no business driving at night.

That’s got nothing to do with auto headlights. If anything, taillights also come up with headlights so all these people you’re talking about that drive with no taillights are the one that don’t have auto headlights (or have it but chose not to use the auto on/off feature)

You obviously have never had to do a high speed run with a car loaded with moonshine, hoping to avoid the revenuers.

    I mean, I haven’t either, but…

All vehicles should have the selectable auto/DRL headlight feature on the headlight stalk.

It doesn’t mean it’s wrong. I’ve seen way too many people driving with no headlights on when it’s fairly dark (most of them in older cars). I wish we could rely on people not being dumb, unfortunately we can’t and I’d rather all these people that forget to have the option for the car to do it for them. just like blind spot monitors. I’ve read so many people complaining about it and how unnecessary they are. I can tell you, riding a motorcycle, I never feel safer than when I see the little lights on the mirror. Of course we can’t fix stupid, and I’m not gonna lie and say that no one with BSM ever merged in my lane but I can count it on one hand. However there are 100 times more people without BSM that merge into my lane when I’m on the bike. Sure they most likely didn’t see me and didn’t check their blind spots, but that’s why I feel safer being next to a car that has BSM. Anyway I digress…

My 2006 GTO has auto lights but I’m not sure if they come on with wiper use. I have it set to early on and late off but if they’re not on I just flick them on.

Once in a while I'm that guy who forgets to put his lights on right away in the dark. I mean that's on me. The daylights are always on. What I could definitely concede to enjoying is an auto taillights feature, cuz that's where it's most dangerous when one forgets headlights.

In my opinion if there's a selector that doesn't reset, then you have the scenario where one driver sets the lights to something different than the other drivers are used to. So it should be auto setting on vehicle startup with a button that behaves like the stability control button so you can manually turn lights on/off/ running light. And I would want this auto system to magically select running lights and headlights.

Yes I had an older car with auto headlights and they would only come on when it was dark (right after the sun sets), not when it was overcast or slightly dark

He's probably suggesting people drive with their lights auto on, in poor visibility conditions, and if it's bright enough their lights stay off when he wishes the driver turned on running lights.

I’m not sure I understand you? If it’s bright enough and setting is on auto headlights then headlights should turn off and DRL turn on (which is what it’s meant to do)

I see that often as well. Those are daytime running lights. Auto headlights turn on tails as well.

People forgetting to turn on headlights because of DRLs is a great argument in favor of auto lights.

Yes and you'll be driving in light rain for example with no tail lights illuminated

Is this all canada's fault for mandating drls only in front?!?!?

How about you take some personal responsibility and know how to safely operate the vehicle you're driving rather than impose more useless mandates

Your comment falls in the “you can’t rationalize with crazy” bucket. It’s not about what I need to take responsibility for. It’s what I don’t trust our error prone species with more distractions than ever to be responsible for. Give some thought before you post if you really want to continue a constructive discussion.

15 minutes after and I find myself still shaking my head thinking about your attitude. You bought the truck dude. You could have googled the answer. You got the answer in the first comment. You made yourself that bed, now you gotta sleep in it.

Maybe instead of mandating auto headlights to protect those that can't remember to turn on their light when it's dark we make obtaining a driver license significantly harder to weed out those idiots

My 24 year old Camry has auto headlights. My 20 year old Corolla CE with manual windows and locks has auto headlights. But my 23 TRD ORP with power everything, moonroof, along with heated seats and steering wheel and pushbutton start, doesn't. Makes zero sense.

Or maybe Toyota is saying the Limited and TRP Pro drivers cannot be trusted to operate headlights on their own hence why it's included on those two trims...

Both my 2013 Corolla and 2015 Rav4 didn't have auto headlights.

To answer your question first, I am 50. The only car I have owned that did not have auto headlights prior to this 4Runner was a 1984 Honda Accord. The reason I said Josh’s COMMENT falls in the crazy bucket is because he said…
I know how to safely operate my vehicle. That was never the issue. But people don’t read or pay attention anymore which is a huge reason why our country is where it is right now. Nevertheless, to call requiring the OPTION (because that is all it ever has been, meaning at some point the responsible individual behind the wheel has to make the conscious responsible decision to engage the auto lights) a “useless mandate” is crazy. If you read a majority of the posts in this thread, most think the OPTION to turn them on would be a move toward a safer driving experience for the population. That was my point.
I would have bought the truck regardless of the option because again, as narrow minded as you might choose to be in this discussion, my comments were not about me. My choice to not buy the truck would have 0 impact on whether or not someone else operates the vehicle incorrectly. I posed the question to make sure I wasn’t missing something because somewhere just after 35 years of age I realized I don’t know everything.

Making obtaining a driver license more difficult is the most brilliant comment made in this thread. Unfortunately, that is not economically beneficial to any number of big business entities such as insurance companies, municipalities, oil producers, etc. And less drivers on the road would lessen the economic viability of small businesses so we have to work with what we are dealt. But I like the way you’re thinking.
