@Saker - just out of curiosity - why welding the tip and/or elbow instead of using clamps?

    Personal preference, I presume.
On my ‘14, the 90 and the tip were welded, but the tip was not seal welded. I decided I wanted both seal welded.
Not a fan of putting clamps when it can be welded.

Now you have me researching 'seal welded'...can I assume this means a fully welded seam with no gaps, or is that a special type of welding? You did mention taking your 4R to an individual who does custom work...

Yes, fully welded seam with no gaps.
I brought it to someone that welds stainless exhaust on “specialty/race” cars.
Your exhaust on your T4R is stainless.

Good to know, thanks. I know what to convey to the exhaust shop.

The exhaust may be some type of stainless, 200 or 400 series stainless, but it is not 300 series as the piping and muffler are all magnetic.

Hey @ Saker. I got the elbow on Wednesday and the tip today. I was expecting the tip to just slip right over the stainless piece (or the oem exhaust), but the tip has a larger inside diameter than the pipe's outside diameter...I guess that's why they include the two spacers.

Edit: I see now why the exhaust tip has a larger ID than the OD of the oem exhaust - it has to slip over the larger OD of the stock exhaust end, which is flared, and the spacers fit in behind that larger section, filling up the gap so the clamp can tighten.

How did the installer fill up the gap between the OD of the elbow pipe and the larger ID of the tip? It sort of looks like there is a slightly larger piece of pipe in between the two, but I can't really tell from the second photo above; it might just be a reflection on the inside of the tip.

You got it correct, installer used a filler piece to fit the 2 by inserting another short piece in between the OEM OD and the tip ID, then seal welded all together. Made it quite strong without bending and flaring.

Thanks. Did you cut off the slotted portion of the tip prior to taking it to the shop, or have him trim it?

Sorry to keep barraging you with questions...;)

    No worries on the questions.
Took it to the shop, he did all the work.
I just conveyed what I was looking for as an end result.
He took it from that point to completion.

Took the photos and the parts to two shops today. One didn't fill me with confidence they knew what I wanted, and were too pricey. The other understood exactly what I was wanting, and I have an appointment on Thursday to have this done. @Saker - one last question. Do you know this measurement:

Thanks. I was looking for the measurement to the end of the cut plastic, but I can figure it out from what you gave me.

Well, major disappointment today. The shop I visited on Tuesday who said to come back this morning, where I dropped it off today, just called, and they want to 'make some additional modifications' which included cutting off the hanger and repositioning it. For an additional fee, of course. I told them to take my 4Runner off the lift, and DO NOT do any work on it, I would be by to pick it up. If they can't do it the way I left photos and instructions, leave it alone.

I will be looking for another shop. Rats. The guy the other day said 'No problem! We can do it just like that!' Yeah, right.

Custom fabricator found, 5 minutes from work. I am going back on Saturday, I think this will work. He understood what I want.

Cut mine just after the rear axle and welded on an extra hangar for support. I got tired of crushing the tip flat...

Project side exhaust complete. Mine turned out a bit different than @Saker, using the same materials. I don't know if my stock rear hanger was a bit higher, but we did not end up cutting or modifying that at all. Because of that, the tip had to be angled a bit more down, to clear the bumper plastics, and is a bit further back. Same end result, more or less.IMG_0348.jpg IMG_0349.jpg IMG_0351.jpg IMG_0352.jpg IMG_0353.jpg

Thanks to @Saker for all the help and photos.

So having done this project this way, I got to wondering...would it have been possible for an exhaust shop to have put a 90* bend in that stock exhaust tail section to route it to the side? In lieu of adding a separate elbow & tip? Just curious.

It looks good. I’m wondering if the chrome tip is necessary, maybe get more ground clearance with just a plain elbow pipe tucked up higher.

So how does it perform with the hatch window open, any smell detected? I suppose you could try plugging a carbon monoxide monitor into the AC outlet in back to see if it gets triggered by any CO getting swept in. There are several variables to consider, like how far the window is open, speed, hard accelerating or decelerating, etc.

That was sort of the reason for the question in my last post. I could've just left the outlet side on the elbow longer, and perhaps angle cut the end, and it would have accomplished what you are saying. I personally am not going to get into too many situations where the tip is in danger of being flattened. Plus, I liked the look on @Saker's rig so much, I wanted to go that direction. If the OEM rear exhaust pipe section could be bent to the side, it would have saved a lot of cutting, fitting, and welding, though.

I've not had a chance to check that out yet, just finished this project yesterday. I will see if I can check that out.

thanks. I can’t take the credit, saw someone else do it on the other 4Runner forum. It came in handy especially it’s hidden and no one knows it’s there. But since I got my rear bumper I haven’t purchased more to put there.

    I might go this route!
If you wheel often, I feel like you're bound to hit your exhaust tip more often. On the trails, I hear the mud flaps dinging rocks all the time.
