    I still cant believe the dealer did an oil change for OP and didn't just ask if he wanted to replace the housing with an OE one since the tube was missing! Wild.
    Now its a aluminum vs plastic housing debate. Cause this forum really needed another one of those ;)

    Not complaining for the record, just found it funny.

    Maybe. I've heard of stock 4Rs having needle bearing issues as well though. Just pointing out that Toyota may be aware of certain issues but do not always correct them.

    Personally, I don't think the plastic housing is an issue really. I went to aluminum after a cheap filter wrench cracked the plastic housing. 100% using the motivx filter wrench would have avoided this.

    NEVER CHANGED THE FILTER AND BILLED FOR IT ANYWAYS!

    I have seen this first hand on my wifes Runner. Free oil changes just arent worth it.

    So you found out some of the same stuff I did. Don't mess with the housing. Funny you mentioned the crappy mazda with 250k plus. My wife's first car was a 72 Datsun B210. I had to replace the timing chain after some grease monkey screwed it up while I was on cruise. Since the car had over 220,000 miles on it I figured I might as well rebuild the engine. Just doing regular oil changes every 3000 miles using Castrol 20w-50 conventional oil & Nissan filters. That engine was pretty much in new condition. The original honing marks were still on the cylinder walls. So I'll stick to what the manufacture put on that car, especially Toyota. On the yota I change the oil every 5000 miles using Mobil One 0W-20 and use Toyota filters. I know I know with synthetic oil etc etc etc...To my way of thinking it's a cheap insurance policy for that engine. I get the oil at wally world and the filters at the Toyota dealership, they are cheaper there. Now if I'm on the road and go over 5000 no worries since it mostly highway driving. Again my two cents. What's WWW?

    First off thank you for trying to find the data.
    This is for information only. No harm intended in this response. Some are calling this thread heated.
    Clarification, the tube in the plastic one is longer than the one that comes in the aluminum one. Each tube is made the same and is held in place with a tab. I understand one may view this as maybe risky to replace this tube and not comfortable with bending the tab to secure the replacement tube.
    If the tube comes loose on a canister it is because the tab was not bent enough to secure the tube. That goes with a new plastic can or a modified aluminum can.
    Thanks again for information.
    I am comfortable enough to change over to a stronger canister modded with the original tube from the plastic canister.
    I still have my OEM plastic canister with the tube. If you need photos of exactly how they are fastened, I would be more than happy to supply any pics.
    BTW, I only use OEM filters on any of my vehicles.

    Thanks, never got that far as to how the tube is secured to the base. I'll look at it the next oil change, pictures will help.

    The tube in the aluminum housing is shorter. (Suitable for camry filters)
    If swapping to the aluminum housing be sure to use the spring and tube from the original plastic housing.

    Now for the question. Camrys, Lexus and 4 runners are three of the top selling vehicles of the Toyota line. Why would Camry & Lexus take a metal housing and 4 runners plastic. In this world of bean counters using one or the other with just a different tube and Toyota number would seem to be more cost efficient. I'll be curious to see the reason behind this.
    On another note when I was looking for a oil filter wrench the Motivx never popped up during my research, only the Tool Guy wrench showed up. So I got the Tool Guy wrench which cost a little more.

    Both tabs bent up so tube can be rotated.
    Released and rotated 90 degrees
    Removed, cleaned and tube inserted and tabs bent down slightly to lock back in place.

    People think plastic/composite is weaker than metal. This isnt always the case. Aluminum can also crack and deform when dropped or miss handled.

    Unless you're very un capable to R&R the tube from OEM Plastic bowl Don't. I have done it before & will <1k when I hit 5k. It's spring loaded, I just went & removed it from the OEM plastic 1 I have from 2018 4Runner. Just finesse the two tabs on 1 side & pop it out. No big whoo. BTW they are assembled meaning they can be dis-assembled too.

    My guess is that dealer will say the tube must have been sucked up into the engine, so it’s gonna need a new engine. Lol.

    I predict, the dealer will say that the can is metal not an OEM toyota part and likely it was broken or missing the tube because its not OEM and they have no idea about any of this.. the fact they serviced the oil and claimed to change a filter, will of course...not be discussed.

    They don't want to hassle with the skid plate and canister setup on the bottom of the motor so they skip it and tell you it was changed.

    Way back when I was looking for one the Motivx didn't appear???
    Just like now I've been pricing plastic oil housing units. Called up several dealerships cheapest one I could find this time around was $165.70 high was $206.04. When I google it up with the part number cheapest is $42-->$112. The 42 is from EBAY. There are several on EBAY from 42-->112. Yet when you hit on the reviews it's the same people reviewing on all the different prices. So I guess it's to the dealer I go.

    I'll soon have 2 Plastic bowl, but they'll have the stand pipe from Metal bowl. I guess I could sell them & let buyer know the stand pipe isn't for the 4Runner??

    I have the original plastic from my 2018 4Runner & when I change the oil & filter @5 k on my current 4Runner I will be installing the Toyota Metal bowl, hence 2 Plastic OEM bowls .I have the Motivx filter bowl wrench from spring of 2018. Works great.
