TRD Pro grille

Haz parts, waiting for a free morning to do the install. Planning on plastidipping instead of doing the valence add on.

 

When you do it this way will the lights come on as your DRL would? Or only when headlights on? I really want to add these they look sharp. Seems like you need to buy a few extra parts though.

 

Got mine in, waiting on the lights so i can do it in one go.

 

I dont know, i think they come on as the truck is on. But i will let you know as i should be installing them this week. And for extra parts it costs about $50

 

FWIW, I also did the TRD Pro upgrade on my SR5 and it's pretty easy. My frame of reference is the MINI world (I've had 4) where I did a fair amount of overhaul on the body plastic across different models, and all were more laborious than this was. That said, I will also note that I couldn't for the life of me salvage a single clip in the process. Unlike the MINI clips, I couldnt' get to these with enough leverage to compress the 'tree' of the clip such that it could be extracted without damage. Even when I managed to compress one, it never retained the full spread needed for reuse. I'm heading to a general auto parts store to see if I can source similar ones first, before committing to OEM replacements. Regardless, the process is simple enough and well worth it, if you don't mind paying several bills for a few pieces of plastic.

This is a simplified version of events, which I think would have helped me in retrospect had I understood the process better (even after reading other posts and watching a video, it wasn't as obvious until I did it myself: )
1. You remove the top plastic shroud covering the front 15% of the engine compartment, via 13 clips.
2. You remove the T-shaped bracket, and the top grille cover (body colored trim piece) as one unit, by releasing the clips and unscrewing the T bracket from the chassis. Note you will be tempted to release 4 or 5 clips or screws below the T bracket as they appear to be holding the trim piece to the grille assembly. FALSE. The trim piece and T bracket come OUTWARD with a pull. Second note: the install instructions will advise covering the surrounding edges of body color plastic on the front end with masking tape. I did this, but I didn't cover the facing edges of the trim piece itself being removed. Mistake! I scraped the edge of one corner as I pulled it out, and will be paint-penning to correct it.
3. Pull the stock upper grille off of that trim piece after removing the T bracket, swap out with the new grille piece, put back together. All that's happening here is replacing the grille because the stock grille has the Toyota emblem's oval base in it, which you no longer need.
4. Put it all back together. Now you have the horizontal body color bar of plastic with the oval cutout for the Toyota emblem that no longer exists. The T O Y O T A garnish piece is overlaid onto this with adhesive.
5. Go replace all those broken clips, ha

My next step is to plastidip from here down. We'll see how that goes!

One page back has a silver 5th gen with it done.

 

Took me about 30 mins and no.. no cutting, just taking out bunch of tabs and take the top grill out and put the grill on. Do a search on google man you should be able to find couple DIY.

 

Do they sell a kit with all the parts including the lower bumper cover or is there a parts list ?

You don't need to replace the bottom grill, it never comes off during the process.

So I’m obviously very new here (1st post) and even still waiting on my SR5 delivery. I absolutely love this look, but looking at the instructions and this write up, in the end Toyota is making us pay THAT much for an overlay?! Am I understanding the write-up correctly?

Don’t get me wrong I’m still doing it lol, but that just pisses me off. I’m on the wrong side of this business.

And that amber light setup looks good with the TRD grille!

 

Yep. I did the PRO grille update on my Tacoma, but I can't seem to pull the trigger for my 4Runner. I know it looks great, but the cost is crazy. Welcome to the forum!

 

Well, if it makes you feel any better, you are not really paying $600-$700 for plastic. You are paying for the tens of thousands of dollars in R&D and tooling. I wouldn't be surprised if it was over $100,000 to make the molds and tools required to inject the plastic into those molds, not to mention the lettering. Plus packaging and shipping from Japan. So yes there is about $40 worth of plastic but it cost thousands to get it onto the shape you see and to your door.

Still too much for me though.

Being that I work in R&D, I should have thought about it in those terms and totally thought about it from consumer view only...doh. I spent several million on just developing a molded durable case to house micro vacuum system for wound suction in the field.

 

The TRD pro grill is cool looking and I was a sucker like everyone else and did mine. The install was easier than anyone can imagine a phillips screwdriver and 25 minutes its done. The sad part is we are all paying 560 bucks plus for cheap 10 bucks worth of plastic. This is the biggest racket ever. Some fat cat is sitting back and laughing his as off. If anyone is smart enough to create a cheaper knock off you would be able to quit your job and sit back laughing as well as the money comes rolling in.

 

A large 3d printer and your a millionaire....

 

$550, or so, two pieces, thirty minutes and a bit of PlastiDip:

 

Noticed in the instructions it calls for 3M GPAC or 3M Prep Solvent-70. Not easy to find. Wondering what others have used to clean the area the garnish sticks to. Thanks

 

Just alcohol wipes of any kind should do the job.

 

I wouldn't don't it if Toyota artificially sets a higher price to limit the amount of people buying them. The TRD pro grille for the tacos is a lot laterl and it's not this expensive

 

I can't comment on the quality, but https://trailstandardoffroad.com/ has knock off upper grilles and PRO valances for $330 no lettering and $410 with lettering.

 

Does the Pro grill clip in to the bumper. Wondering if there is anything else holding it other than the 3M tape. Thanks

 

The fascia cover is held on by tape alone.

 

How are these holding up in the weather since they are only held together with tape? Thanks

 

I don't have one so I have no firsthand experience. That's the way the "from the factory (port)" TRDP fascia is installed also and I've never seen a post about one falling off.
