Covered by manufacturer warranty? Not likely.

You know, technically, Toyota could reject your warranty if you didn't use TGMO or Mobil 1. Because they don't recommend anything else.

Which is ironic considering most dealerships use neither of those brands getting their oil in bulk out of a drum when they service your vehicle. I was told I could request the Toyota branded oil but there would be a cost involved.

I let them do one free service but I'll never let them touch anything again. A few thousand miles later I wanted to change it myself rather than getting their "free" service. What I found was the filter housing and drain plug were insanely tightened to the point of having to use a long breaker bar. They torqued nothing and only overtightened with an impact gun.

From p527 of the 2023 Owners manual: "Toyota Genuine Motor Oil" is used in your Toyota vehicle. Use Toyota Genuine Motor Oil" or equivalent to satisfy the following grade and viscosity. Oil Grade: ILSAC GF-6A multigrade engine oil. Recommended viscosity SAE 0W-20.

There are some non OEM things that they can get way with. Like Wipers, fluids, air filter, engine oil etc. I mean Toyota even makes Washer fluid if I am not wrong lol

True. Pretty sure I've let them off the hook on most things when I installed the Maggie ;). Frequent fluid/filter and other maintenance in my future, lol.

I think any heavy lifted 4runner on 34in tires at 85mph is close to full power.

Some say that helps keep the center of gravity down low ;)

Just starting the engine requires full power. But who drives 85 in these? At least here it’s 65 so you get 70-75 max from me.

    Agreed.

I abused and neglected my '03 (V8) and it was running strong at 257K miles. Most of Toyota's engines seem pretty bulletproof, including the 1GR.

I'm always in favor of a low center of gravity. I even try to load heavy things as low as possible and ahead of the rear axle when possible.

I'm about to drive 1400 miles in a few days. You can bet I'll be doing 80+ for a lot of it.

70-75 for me. Highest limit we have in CA is 70. Either way, keep an eye on your moly counter.

"Oil is oil." - Blackstone Labs FAQ page

In other words, there is little to no significant difference in performance or longevity as long as the oil used meets the manufacturer's specs and is changed at the appropriate interval. Spending more makes you feel better but the engine couldn't care less. Always willing to listen if someone has non-anecdotal evidence to the contrary.

    Thanks!

I just added a moly gauge, so I can make more informed decisions about oil change intervals. :D

Toyota doesn’t make oil so the engineers wouldn’t have much say. Also do you have or want a metal oil filter housing cap?

This is getting silly now. Engineers give the requirements, and oil is made accordingly. Toyota doesn't make everything. Your transmission is not made by Toyota. Not sure about 5 speed, but 8 speed Aisins are in non Toyota vehicles too

If Toyota can approach Aisin and asks them to build them a transmission according to their requirements, why will you be surprised if Toyota approaches ExxonMobil and asks them to make a better oil? Toyota is a monster of a company, they can dictate.

Engineering sends an email to purchasing saying they need 0/20 viscosity. Purchasing calls their oil brand contacts to get pricing and they shoot in the middle. There’s no dudes in lab coats brutally arguing about how much moly should be used in the engine.

This discussion reached the point of absurdity when folks say that things just happen randomly and there's no planning involved, and that Bob the oil guy knows more than the engineer who designed the motor.
The software engineer writes the software, tells you what precautions you need to take so that your system remains safe. You're going to listen to that software engineer, or you're going to listen to Bob the IT guy lol

Dam, I posted that Exxon/Mobil mfg Toyota Motor Oil. For years from 2008 (Toyota's 2 FJ's 1 Tacoma & 4Runner TRD OR) through now(my 2023 only has 1925 miles on it) I've only used Pennzoil 0-20w Fully Synthetic recommended by Toyota. I trade @ 90k or less ,SO I can't get into all this oil debate except , I feel if it's a repatriatable Oil mfg. & meets the std, you can't be wrong. Just my opinion. Yeah I have a little back ground on eng's. mainly turbine's.
Not sure what I'll use on this vehicle. ( my buddy has a fit that I go by mfg recommended time frame, i.e. 10k, I promised him I'd do R&R Oil @ 5k only because I hardly drive now)Like I always had posted If Pennzoil is good enough R. Penske Racing I'm good W/it. Also saw a comparison yrs ago W/Mobil 1 vs other oils in NYC Taxi's. Because of al the additives there wasn't ANY significant differences.? I
