TRD Pro vs Off road with KDSS

The most typical size people go to is 285/70/17, which usually measures close to 32.7" tall × 11.2" wide. It varies by manufacturer and style, but that's what it calculates out to.

 

Same story for me

 

We just went through the PRO/TRD ORP decision 2 weeks ago and ended up with a 23' TRD ORP KDSS. I actually went to buy a 24' TRD ORP non-KDSS but my dealer who I've worked with for a LONG time gave me a deal on 23' with 1400 miles by taking $8k off MSRP($51k). This is our 5th 4Runner but 1st KDSS and I really like the onroad manners of it, especially in the mountains on I70. As for the wheels my wife likes the PRO's so as some of you have said I downgraded but it's a looks thing for her and we only upgraded to 275/70/17's so no issue on 7 in wide wheels.

One thing I missed in looking at both of these 4Runners was the auto lights, we have auto high's but why would Toyota not put auto lights on every 4Runner. Oh well...

285/70/R17 (just under 33" diameter)

285/75/R17 are actually much larger diameter, almost 34" (75 is the diameter)

And Duratrac line up is nice, good in rain and snow too, I almost bought them in '21

 

Congrats! Great choice on that ORP. And even greater choice listening to your wife on the wheels

Kinda ridiculous that it doesn't have auto lights, my sons $32k Bronco and our 22' Tacoma TRD ORP have them!

 

@COL4Runner your'e not wrong, people go off in that thread I attached, saying exactly what youre pointing out. And they give other examples of other 4R downfalls I don even think of as well.

Many manufacturers are just over 33" but some are under. Cooper Discoverer's are 32.76" in both P and LT.

holy, I may have been wrong about my own tire specs for a while. They're true 33's. And I thought they were 55lbs, might be 59/lbs.
That makes each wheel 88lbs

Since we’re on the topic of correcting @djwantke , 75 is technically not the diameter but the aspect ratio of the width of the tire (here 285 mm) to determine the height of the side wall. In other words 285/75 have a sidewall height of 213.75 mm (285x0.75) and 285/70 have a sidewall height of 199.5 mm (285x0.70) which is the only difference that makes the latter shorter (assuming same wheel diameter of 17in) at roughly 33in per @kmeeg

 

Oh god you're right, what the hell was I writing. 70 or 75 clearly pertains to the side wall

 

You should tell him that tier-one shade tree mechanics flatten the cardboard first before lying in it.

Pro rims are not a downgrade. Toyota wouldn’t have designed them for the Pro if they sucked.

 

True, you're not wrong
Folks aren't saying they suck. They're saying they are 1/2" narrower, which larger tire specs don't list as safe for use. They're saying they don't come with valve stem protection. Making them an inferior choice for larger tires. But, many ppl run 285s on 7" wheels and claim not to have probs

 

Just chatted with a chick on FB comments today on the BC 5th Gen 4Runner group. Had a dude plastidip her OR wheels to look like SCS F5's. I mean heck I think they did a good job looks good, from someone who ran same OR wheels for 5 yrs.

 

I have scratched them real bad. I might do this in near future
