    Diff breather for the rear diff. I have a Y connection for the locker as well. Front is not needed as it sits high enough

    How does the water get in other than through the breather? The pumpkin is sealed otherwise you’d kill your diff at the first puddle

    It’s a hose that is connected to the breather vent on the differential and that sits as high as possible (or higher than water at least) to let air in/out so water doesn’t get sucked back in when water cools the diff during a water crossing (like a scuba essentially)

    Yeah, I understand the concept, just don't need to do it in my case. But maybe Yotaholic doesn't understand that the fitment at the diff is watertight and won't allow water in. At least, that's what it sounds like.

    Meh. I drive through water a lot. No breather relocation either. No signs of water entry, so far. Only 108000 miles, though. Since January 2019.

    Yea diff breathers relocations are not a necessity. More of an insurance sort of things. As long as diff temp is hot enough and water not cooling it down then water is not going to get in because air wants to go out of the vent with inside heat (air goes from high temp to low temp, high pressure to low pressure. Science…) It’s really when diff temps get cold suddenly due to water cooling it too much that it risks sucking the water in the diff. And then you’d definitely need to drain it and change the fluids if that happens

    i will repeat what I replied to the OP’s PM to me where it was stated I/we must not understand that “some engines can be rebuilt but not Toyotas”…

    My reply:

    You started a thread about over 300K reliability (framing it as a longevity issue) on one of the most reliable engines Toyota ever made for your first post on the forum (without introducing yourself or providing any context) and have not participated in any meaningful way in your own thread. You know exactly what you were doing.

    That is the mark of a troll until proven otherwise.

    …0.03% of all vehicles survive to 300K miles. I would not call that a longevity issue.

    Yeah the post title and the post itself had two separate issues. Engine longevity is one, and that’s pretty well known. But engine “rebuildability” is a separate thing.

    I guess it’s good to know it wouldn’t be worth trying to rebuild. Besides the cylinder wall thickness, I didn’t think about the vvti and how that could be its own headache with clearances and such.

    Theoretically, in a mad max type of situation that really justifies putting money into a vehicle that wore out it engine, there is a solution. I think we all know the answer to that problem :D The cockroach of all crate engines…

    Before anyone gags, imagine the fuel efficiency of an LS in a tired old 4runner. :anonymous:

    Some of us have kids and mortgages and wives, I'm sorry man but I can't afford to change my oil every 3k and change my diff fluid after dusty trips or water ways. Overkill and naive I say. Toyota knows more about what your Toyota needs than you do, then they wrote you a manual.
    Diff breathers are a pretty common mod, I've seen many on here, not a bad idea if you like the rush of driving through water. The man seems to care about his diff, knows more about his diff than you, that's why he added a breather, I feel like it's possible that he likely does check his fluid / change his fluid as per manual.
