TRD Pro vs Off road with KDSS

When I say "don't do anything crazy with it" I mean I'm not trying to build a rock crawler, or drive through 6 feet deep mud holes. I do want the most capability I can get with a factory warranty. A foot of snow is not uncommon, some tight, steep, slippery, old logging roads, stuff like that.

 

No rear locker is a deal breaker for me.

 

Can add both front and rear lockers to SR5 from a good shop. Then you can engage or disengage at anytime. From factory you can only do in 4L.

 

For what you described above, trd pro offers nothing that is beneficial over ORP + kdss.

I do not know about the US, but the Pro is an immediate $12k jump here in Canada. You could use that to build a pretty damn nice 4Runner, and the way you want it with that $12k. TRD Pro wheels are only 7" wide so not ideal if going to larger tires and the stock tires are not that great either. You could likely build a better 4Runner for half the price of going with the Pro.

 

I don't disagree. They one local dealer has two on the way with KDSS. The bad thing is they have so much extra crap they're only 3k less than a pro. Add in tires and I'm down to 2k difference.

 

They won't move off MSRP for a pro, but it's not anywhere close to a 12k jump.

 

Much larger price gap up here, but still $8,040 more for the US. That is still a lot of money you could use for upgrades.

 

Except you can't find a ORP for $47,130. I've been looking but they're all in the low 50's around here

save yourself some money and do small upgrades that you want, like and do yourself; I still love my 2016-4RTP w/ KDSS along with Bilstein 5100’s all around.
Just turn 87,000 miles on it!

Yes it is price wise. But since our Canadian ORPs (at least my '22) come standard with things like auto headlights and high beams, factory remote start, dual zone climate, heated seats and Kdss I didn't even consider the Pro. Just not worth the extra bucks for a name and argueably superior all round stock performance. Not bashing the Pro crowd but ORPs here are a much better bang for your buck.

 

New guy here, got an ORP after a while of debating. Once I realized there was not much of a difference between pro and ORP I went with the ORP. The Pros were going for 55+k while a boring white ORP was $47k.

 

Kdss is not good on dirt roads at faster speeds. Too stiff. If anything you would want to disable kdss in these instances (great mod from dr kdss). Pro suspensions are more or less designed for that.

kdss is great on pavement to reduce body lean like you said. Or at very slow speed off road, it gives ever so slightly more articulation on a stock set up

 

Fully loaded ORP with kdss is near $52k. That’s very close to the price of the pro. If you add better tires, wheels, and suspensions you’re essentially there if not more assuming that you pay a shop for the install.

if you want to stay stock I say the pro is a better deal. If you want a fully loaded truck and put better suspensions, tires, etc… then ORP is the way to go

I have Trail w/ Dr. KDSS swaybar kill switch.
If you don't like a lot of fluff and tech, it's a better setup than PRO imo

the cheapest ORP with KDSS is $51,639
the PRO is $57,128
now I'll have to figure out the cost of upgrades I would want on the OPR. the PRO would stay stock

 

Do you know that trd pro specific parts are also installed at the u.s. port? So they don’t even come out of the tahara factory like that.. don’t want some hack job conducted the u.s port.

the engine is what's important, and that's built in Japan. The rest doesnt matter, it's not rocket science and whether it's done at port or at discount tires. If you get new suspensions, wheels, and tires on an ORP it's also done in the US, not in Japan. If anything, with the Pro you still get all the work under warranty.

Also toyota techs that install these at port are still better than the ones at the dealership that will do the oil change

 

Well obviously the other stuff are still built in japan. I am talking about relative to an ORP. All the bits you are paying for are just us installed stuff.. no built in japan premium even. So what are we even doing? May as well just buy the wheel from discount tire

1 mo ago, got my $50k ORP for $46k. No additional dealer add on extras. Pros were being sold at msrp or with additional dealer add ons. So yeah $10k premium

 

I'd be interested to know if fox shocks, TRD Pro roof rack, TRD skid, TRD Pro wheels, etc made in Japan? I'm thinking it's USA. Especially the shocks since Fox making for Tacoma and Tundra as well? I'm thinking same story for wheels. Not sure..

With my personal experience I know TRD Pro specific parts are not quality as Japan made TRD ORP. Again, just my experience. Maybe just my TRD Pro is off quality on things like wheel balance, alignment, roof rack crossbar tightness,.....

 

what I meant was that the "not built in Japan, so it's shit quality" is really meant for the engine and the DNA of the truck.
Not for aftermarket parts whether you buy them from Toyota or another store in the US.
If you're leaving the truck stock whether its a limited, ORP, or SR5, then sure you could argue that everything comes from Japan but it doesnt really make any difference in terms of quality as these parts are not known to fail just because they were installed at port in the US. If anything, how many suspensions from the TRD Pro have failed compared to XREAS or insanely expensive repairs for KDSS if not properly maintained? And for anyone that is getting aftermarket suspensions in the US, then they are in the same boat as the TRD Pro in terms of "made in Japan" but dont get the factory warranty backed up by Toyota

 

I'm willing to bet that those products are made in America, then shipped to Japan to be INSTALLED on the factory floor during assembly.
