When to Regear??

I’ll keep my 4Runner xD
Just spoke to a guy who bought a jeep new and it needed an entirely new ignition system (plugs, coils and harness) at 30,000 miles…

He is on 37s without any drama though. So pick your poison I guess

But the warranty won’t help me when I’m miles away from civilization and I have to use SOS on my Garmin to get rescued lol

If you have decided to regear, then go 4.88 and 37s, and throw an Eaton locker in the front too. 34s won't quite cut it, they are very small

35s and a mobile house are also higher than 34s. If that Gladiator with 4.10 is fine, then OP's 4Runner with 3.73 is much finer

Yeah. The 4Runner is geared high to begin with, for fuel economy. Adding a bunch of weight and bigger tires puts a bigger strain on the engine and drivetrain.

Dude, the Gladiator has not been designed to carry that much crap and those big tires. So what are you going to say now if OP decides to mount 37 in tires? Are you going to suggest that he should strengthen his axles or, get bigger axles for the 4Runner?

 

Yeah, and I have smaller tires and still notice reduced performance. I can't even use overdrive without it downshifting constantly.

Your idea of perfectly fine will not be the same as everyone else's. Some people think it's underpowered to begin with.

I would suggest that anyone who is doing shit that requires 37's should probably get a different vehicle.

 

My truck wasn't fast from Day 1, I haven't noticed anything different with 34s

 

37s are the new 35s

 

If you haven't noticed the difference, you must not be paying attention. I noticed the difference from 265/70/17 KO2's to 285/70/17 Toyo AT3's instantly. Anyone who is paying attention would notice the difference jumping up in tire size. It's almost impossible not to notice.

How do you like the at3’s? They are quite a bit lighter than the ridge grapplers.

I'm very happy with their overall performance. They're quiet, and have decent traction in a variety of conditions. The only complaint is that I'm starting to see so dry-rot already. They're not even 4 years old, and probably have 40-50K miles on them. Treadwear has been very good.

I wonder if the dry-rot is a result of them sitting half of the year. Toyo generally has a very good reputation for quality.

 

You’re not wrong. I was reading up on Sandy Cat’s 4Runner. He has a full custom suspension, Dana 60 rear end, triple bypass shocks. Absolutely insane build. Thing weighs close to 8,000 pounds. The work he has had to put into that thing to make it reliable is crazy. It is a constant project that seems to never be complete.

That is what you sign up for if you start modifying a vehicle that much. I used to build race cars. They turn into money pits real fast… My 4Runner will be lightly and tastefully modified and that’s good enough for me.
