Yes I am anticipating a write up on this - specifically if you are not worried about trailer wiring. Looking forward to it!

Yep. No more brake light to it. So you’ll need to do the full mod

Sorry, what specifically are you trying to do with the relays?

If you're trying to combine brake + turn, curt has various modules for that. And if you're trying to split brake and turn from a combined source, there's a different curt module for that. The latter does have some lag with the turns on SR Tacomas per Johnny's testing. I don't have any vehicle with combined turn and drl as my '05 Tacoma doesn't have DRL, but I could test with the tow harness if I ever had spare time.

Combine brake + turn Curt 59187 using external power
Combine brake + turn Curt 56130 without external power
Separate combined brake + turn Curt 56196

Awesome! The powered brake + turn is perfect. Don’t know why I didn’t think to check Curt’s offerings

How do we know which (Curts) to use for our 4R model year? Those Curts are on sale now and would be nice to buy it before they go up in price.

CURT 59187. It’s going to be cut and spliced into the wiring harness that holds the SmartTap

By having the Curt and pairing it with the SmartTap, do you still need the relays as well?

Nope. Relays didn’t work correctly so they will be replaced by the Curt module

That’s awesome! Where did you get the connector plugs to make the wire connections? Are you posting a diy? Exited to make this to my 4R. Thanks for making it possible for all of us!

No problem. Some of the wires are terminated correctly with the harness you posted and can be moved over to the correct connector with no modification. Others needed to be terminated with a different pin and those pins came with the connector. For all the other connections, I soldered. You could probably use a T tap or other solderless wire connector for the few that need more than one wire connected. I believe that’s just ground and turn signal output from the SmartTap although the turn signal output already comes with a spliced wire. I will post some sort of instructions although they will probably just be diagrams of the connectors and what wires need to be connected to them, not an actual electrical schematic because I don’t know how to make one of those

By “wire terminated” you mean color matching the wires? What about the connector (below) and the pins, where can I get them?

Part number for the connector is 90980-11973. This is for the male connector though. The female connector is what is needed to make it work. This can be found online from different retailers. Used to have a link here but it appears to be broken.

Don’t follow that picture exactly. Wiring has changed since then. If you never tow, and have zero interest in keeping the trailer wiring in tact, then you can follow that first attempt. I’ll see if I can get some wiring instructions later today

If you're going to be changing/building wiring connectors, make sure to pick up a set of pin keys if you don't have them already. Makes all the difference and cheap too.

May be best to wait for @Kezin as he is drafting a DIY for everyone to follow and can provide guidance on how to install/remove the terminal from the connector.
That’s a great pin kit! But may be too much to have around if you are not using it constantly.

I have a set of those but ended up just using a pick instead. I like the handle on the pick more

I’ll check, those may be 090IIU 18 way.

ETA: nope, doesn’t look like a match. I can probably hunt them down though if I had them in hand. Or just buy from aliexpress in bulk.

if you want to send me a known good and tested unit I can reproduce and sell. And send you one in return which is crimped rather than soldered.

Here is my crappy wiring diagram. I don't usually make wiring diagrams on any mods I do because there is no interest typically and I know how it's wired. The F11 connector with unknown part number needs to be set face down to match pins. You want the side you are pushing the pins through to be facing up

This is great! Great job on accomplishing this! Are you open to building a few and selling them? I am willing to pay for a plug and play product! If not, I would appreciate a dedicated write up on exactly how you accomplished this as there are a couple things I don't quite understand.

Gonna run this for a few weeks and see if there’s any issues. Got a little too heavy for my liking with just a connector holding it up. 3D printed an enclosure that requires removing one nut on the old flasher relay bracket and replacing it with this:IMG_0783.jpg IMG_0784.jpg

I still think this mod has safety concerns that need to be addressed.
But that's just me. Sounds like others, not so much if at all.
If a driver with this mod tries to move over on me, they'll get the horn and possibly some sign language.

I retired with a CDL. I can and do appreciate a long signaled lane change.
Habit leads me to still drive this way in my 4R or TJ.

Safety is always imporant, I appreciate you bringing this up to the group.

Keep in mind the normal functionality is fully intact and unchanged:
    • The turn signal lever can be clicked up/down for left/right blinker signaling
    • Stays active until a turn is completed or until its manually clicked back to center

What this thread aims to do is add a feature, which allows for multiple blinks without having to click the stock into a position
    • Activated by pushing the signal level up/down (lightly to make contact, but not clicking into position)
    • This feature is on many modern cars including other models from Toyota.
    • Here's a video from Toyota USA official showing the feature on a Corolla:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LSMtQJIFvk&ab_channel=ToyotaUSA

o_O... If the 3 blink turn signal was a "safety concern" it wouldn't be a standard feature on numerous vehicle brands.

Reprinted the module bracket thing. First one had a small clearance issue with another module. It could have squeezed in, but I’d rather just fix it. Really the SmartTap needed to move forward just a little but the metal bracket interfered so I just moved it all the way to the front. It touches a wire bundle but should be fine. So far, no issues. I have noticed other drivers slow down and pay more attention when the hazards are on, which is good. Nobody seems to have gotten unreasonably upset about using a 4 blink to merge, and I was able to install some cheap Amazon 7440 LEDs in the rear with no hyper flashing. IMG_0793.jpg

I should hope not. Our last 2 new Fords have had the factory 3 blink and never even remotely upset anyone. 3 flashes are plenty and 4 is above and beyond. To the post above who suggests a very long signal, I reserve that for times when I "politely request" a merge where there is not room, not to simply change lanes as is the case 98% of the time.
