Heavier tires kill acceleration? Or it’s just all in my head?

Well, the tire shop I got them from does not have a 30 day warranty, so I’m stuck with them… just Got Them Road forced balanced today. I have a road trip on the highway next week so we will see if at least the shakes and shimmy is corrected. Soon as I got them not only did it feel slower, 50mph to 80mph on and off wheel vibrations and at times shakes… so annoying.

That sucks. Try a pedal commander or sprint booster.

I feel for ya damn. There must be more going on than the 6lbs a tire or whatever. Everyone and their dog has Wildpeaks, and the pitch from every shop is that there is "zero" complaints so far. The shaking happens to lots of Runners regardless of tire manufacturer, that's a tough one.

Dude, I'd invest in pedal commander, from personal experience; each one of my wheels is 85lb
    Goodluck

well, enough of you have mentioned the pedal commander that I will look into it now…

The shop that did the road force made it sound like my suspension needed replaced as well because the front shocks are leaking and they said the control arm bushings are going bad… but I stopped at the shop that I got the tires and who does my regular maintenance, and they said just because the shocks are leaking and the bushings are starting to show a little wear doesn’t mean that it’s hurting performance or unsafe… but the other freaking shop made it sound like I needed to get a lift kit right away or the truck was gonna break down… “ go get the parts for the lift kit and bring it back. We’ll do the install, put on a new belt, and do the rear brakes.” Jesus. They also said that my rear brakes at 40% but they would do them soon and the belt needed replaced… but the other shop looked at the belt with me and said it looked fine… and the suspension was fine with the worn Toyo AT3s and not shaking or shimmying … but I did have to get them road force balanced as well initially.

That's great details to know, sounds like you've been through the ringer. The fact that these things weren't an issue when you had your old Toyo's tells you all you need to know.
*Shop's are a business that make money off orders and installs. Of course they said that shit, sometimes they're not as much as your friend as you think they are regardless of affiliation

There is also pedal monster by Banks that many folks have said they believe to be superior to pedal commander.

oh, they were all like we are so pro police and military (I’m a one-man nonprofit for All First Responders, and Veterans, but primarily police) … talking up how much they give a break to first responders and Veterans…. And then hit me with a laundry list of stuff they say needs repaired.

The other shop does not specialize in 4x4, but a lot of the mechanics there do you have nice rigs and I have been going there for 14 years… they’ve given me a free oil changes, there’s been some times when I blew out a 33 inch tire on one of my pick up trucks and they had a set of 33s that somebody left their that they hooked me up with free… and this supposedly pro police and Veteran off road is telling me that those guys must be terrible and there’s no way that an alignment would have held with how bad my control arm bushings are… but I went right back to the other shop after and on the spot they went through everything with me and we’re just laughing at what a bunch of bullshit shops are like that and dealers… yeah, they said my shocks needed replaced, control arms, brakes, belt, etc…

I am looking at the thread and I see raving reviews, and that it makes the SPRINT booster or pedal commander obsolete… so is it something similar but just more personalized for your vehicle? Did not see in the thread, the explanation of why it makes the other products obsolete.

I will reach out to the guy in SoCal

The weight will definitely effect performance, and a pedal commander (though cool) just increases peddle response, no additional power over just stepping on the gas more.

I made sure to get as close to stock weight as possible and not to over buy, like E load which are way overkill for the majority of users and come with many compromises besides weight. I went with C load A/T's and they have preformed very well in all conditions and didn't make my 4R sluggish.

Just a reminder when people go with C Load, in some tires Load C is lighter than some standard load tires vs with some tire manufacturers Load C is heavier than Load E. Below example comparing 2 famous tire manufacturers with their SL, Load C & Load E options in same size.

I was very happy with my Toyo AT3s but they had so much nail damage. One of the plugs was not holding and I was literally getting ready to drive from Los Angeles to San Diego and needed new tires ASAP… so I didn’t do enough homework to realize how heavy the damn wild peaks are even I in SL…

The tune can adjust the throttle response (which is what a pedal commander does) plus does so much more. I have the kdmax tune and love it. For the price its definitely worth a try.

Also maybe try running a little more air pressure, nothing crazy 35-37psi

Yes sir a tune does make pedal commander and sprint obsolete. There's a major difference in price and result that's why

I read an interesting article the other day on how rotational weight translates to static weight. I believe the conversation was about 11:1. So for every pound of rotation weight, the equivalent static weight would be 11lbs. Really puts it into perspective how heavy tires and wheels can negatively impact performance!

The tune will help a lot with this for sure! By adjusting various parameters in the trucks engine and transmission computers we are able to considerably improve the throttle response, acceleration, low/mid-range power, and overall drivability of the vehicle. I think you’ll be very pleasantly surprised by the outcome! I know I was on my Tacoma. It’s the whole reason I joined the team! Dave is one of the OGs in the game too. There’s none better to work with! He will get you right, I have no doubt!

Maybe that's why I have been seeing more "pizza cutter" (narrow tires) tires as of late?

great article … I’ll never buy tires again without comparing weights … hard lesson learned

makes me wonder too about some folks in SoCa on various popular 4x4s throwing steel old school rims on brand new expensive rigs.

Everything has its purpose. If I was rock crawling I may go heavy E load and a set of steel rims since a steel rim can be fixed out on the trail.

Really make you wonder with the overland tend. With the heavy bumpers/winch/roof top tent/e rated tires/ etc...They are probably getting 13mpg or less.

well, I can assure you most of the vehicles I see in these affluent beach towns are not hitting the trails or any rocks… there are people that probably don’t even know how to put the transfer case into four-wheel-drive….

Every pound saved from rotating weight is equivalent to 8.4 pounds of static weight. Adding 5 pounds of tire per wheel is like adding another 165 pound passenger.

..I have 3/2 lift and other mods, but added pedal commander. I still am averaging city mileage: 18.5L/100km - or 15.29mpg. Stock OR is 16mpg according to google..
