What test drive? My dealer didn't have any unsold units on the lot. All I knew going into it, was it would drive like a brick on wheels.

So you signed on the dotted line then drove away in your brick on wheels with no test drive once it arrived?

My ORP has Part-Time AWD, whatever MPG, and way too much premium shit in it. I'd pay more if I could get less of this digital cheapness. Auto headlights? I have those. Its called muscle memory. I don't even think about turning on my lights. My left hand just reaches up and twists. No thought required.

A key, A KEY, my kingdom for a key!

And now, apparently, for TRD wheel center caps...the hoarders on Ebay are ca$hing in.

Yup, I need one for the spare replacement I just bought. No big deal to pop one from the others should the need arise though.

    Hmmm. Which is more likely?
    • Toyota’s owner’s manual is wrong, and no trim level of 4Runner has full-time 4WD. Or …
    • There’s some codicil in the EPA regulations to explain the logical discrepancy. Perhaps the EPA only requires testing of one trim level per engine. Or maybe the EPA requires an averaging of the mpg across all trim levels. Who knows?
    Think what you want.

Realistically the EPA fuel economy rating is its own boondoggle with dyno test results adjusted by a multitude of fudge factors.

I have to say, I did the same when I got my new 2013 Tacoma. Made the deal by email, went down, signed the paperwork, then drove away. I did have 2 2nd gen Tacomas previously, though, and knew what I was getting.

I had to test drive the 4R, just to see how much different it was from the Tacoma. I was sold on the first drive.

Actually the Toyota Full Time 4WD is quite different than Toyota AWD. As you mention it has a Torsen center differential that can be locked so that equal power is going to both the front and rear wheels. However, when not locked, the center differential will only allow a 60/40 split between power front to back - so even if the center diff senses torque reduction there will always be at least 40% power going to the front or rear wheels. Toyota AWD is typically 100% front wheel drive until slippage is sensed and power is sent to the rear wheels. Also, as you mention, the Full Time 4WD system has a dual range gear box - which typical AWD does not.

Well, the 4Runners less than stellar gas mileage is way more due to weight and aerodynamic drag than it is to driveline inefficiencies within the 4WD system. Also, when in High 4 Free (H4F) - the normal driving condition in the Full Time 4WD Limiteds - the center diff is open/free so that power can be adjusted somewhat between the front/rear wheels. When the part time 4WD systems are in 4HI - there is no center diff - and equal power is being sent to the front/rear wheels. I'm guessing that when the Full Time 4WD system is put into H4L it is very much like the part time 4WD system in 4HI and would get similar gas mileage. Also, the Limited has a different front bumper than some of the other trims - and it has an air deflector under the front bumper than decreases the amount of air that gets under the vehicle. This decreases the aerodynamic drag when the vehicle is moving. I'm thinking this also helps the full time 4WD Limited get the same gas mileage in H4F than the part time 4WD vehicles get in 2WD.

I know that but people are already confused about lights so I chose a much simply explanation of the system.

Since I knew what I was getting into with the JKU. I had no expectations of a car like ride or anything similar, with the 4R. I just made sure there were no interior/exterior defects. The 4R has a bit more body roll than the JKU, but I'm already used to it.

    I love it so far!

    you mad bro? ;)
I am just pointing out discrepancy. Usually in real world, you have to pay to get something more in return. Otherwise, why stop with 4WD then, lets have the "super limited full time6WD" trim, and still have MPG at same numbers.

Maybe they have thrown away lots of stuff to make up for lost MPG due to limited's "full time 4WD" or maybe...just maybe...toyota likes to call its AWD in 4Runner as "full time 4WD".

I agree that the lack of auto headlights is a tad disappointing. My last vehicle without auto headlights was a '76 Nova. However, that was also the last vehicle I had until now with a full-sized spare tire.

You made a valid point. I did not know, so I looked and it seems limited is heavier than ORP.
So its a heavier vehicle, gives full time 4WD and gives you same mileage as ORP, or any other trim.
What gives? Does limited have a small battery pack I don't know about?
I don't know why limited crowd gets riled up when I ask this question. I simply don't understand how toyota can give more (full time 4WD, with more weight) with same fuel consumed. This to me reads like marketing gimmick to sell more Limited.

Are the 20" rims part of the explanation? (i.e. some reduction in unsprung weight).

I don't think the weights are that much different - so I don't think that has a significant impact. I think it is a combination of things that allows the Limited with full time 4WD to get the same mileage as the other trims with part time 4WD. Like I said in an earlier post - the 4Runner's generally shitty gas mileage is mostly due to the weight of the vehicle, its aerodynamics, and its 5 speed tranny (when compared to other similarly sizes vehicles that have 8-10 speed trannies). I don't think there is more than a few % difference in vehicle weight between the different 4Runner trims - so I don't think the small weight difference between a ORP and a Limited has much to do with differences in gas mileage. I think you can drive around in H4F in a FT 4WD Limited and get very close to the same mileage as driving around in 2WD in any of the other trims. I think there are multiple reasons that combine for this - weight and aerodynamics just have a lot more to do with 4Runner gas mileage than mechanical inefficiencies in the 4WD systems - and there are some differences in the Limited that help make up for the FT 4WD with respect to gas mileage. The front bumper of the Limited is lower to the ground and it has an additional air deflector below the bumper that helps reduce the amount of airflow beneath the vehicle - this reduces drag and improves gas mileage. The Limited has 20" wheels with lower profile street centric tires. The lower profile tires have stiffer sidewalls and the tire treads are designed more for road than off-road - so they have a little less rolling resistance. Things like this make up for the slight mechanical inefficiencies in the 4WD system that cost some gas mileage compared to 2WD. I can say this through personal experience though - I don't think the published gas mileage figures are a marketing gimmick. I think all the 4Runner trims have the same mileage estimates (16 city, 19 hwy). I can say that my 2023 Limited exceeds those numbers. When I drive around town (not block by block city driving) stopping at stop lights, slowing/stopping to make turns, etc... I routinely get 17.5-18mpg. When cruising on the highway on longer trips at 75-80mph I usually get 20.5-21.5mpg (closer to 21.5 if I keep the cruise control set close to 75mph.

I'd say anything straight axle would do better on rocks and even the Bronco has a little more capability than the Runner.

    If the frame doesn't rust.

I don't buy thinking about selling.

It doesn't seem likely that every variation of trim would be tested for MPG.

Then buy nothing because no vehicle the general public can afford will appreciate in value. I bought what I wanted and drive/mod it as I want without thinking about the next owner.
