Yeah, it's a speculation thread, if you're expecting facts here, you're doing it wrong. :p

Anyhow, more fuel to the fire: https://www.drive.com.au/news/2024-toyota-prado-engine-release-details-leaked/

Next Prado will be 4 cylinder only. Which might mean the same for the 4Runner. Not that I'd be surprised. It's the same way now with the Lexus having the V8, the 4R has a V6 - just two less cylinders in both in the future.

I think we should just stop calling the Prado a Land Cruiser and call it a Prado. It's not a Land Cruiser. It's a 4Runner/GX chassis and body with some styling nods to the past. Sure, Toyota can slap a badge on whatever, but, calling a 4Runner a Land Cruiser doesn't make it a 70 or 80 series.

So, anything with IFS is not a Landcruiser?

Toyota calling LC Prado in US when the name has no association/name recognition is like shooting yourself in the foot.
I seriously doubt that will happen.
But someone said this is speculation thread...so carry on speculating.

Scroll back and re-read what I wrote. I said nothing about what Toyota should do, but what "we" should refer to whatever box on wheels gets shipped with a Toyota badge that says Land Cruiser.

    "I think *we* should stop..."

    See that "we" in there?

See how it doesn't say "Toyota"? See how it says "we"?

This might help with your English language usage:

    we
    pronoun, plural in construction
    |\ˈwē\
    1. I and the rest of a group that includes me , you and I : you and I and another or others : I and another or others not including you

I mean, at what point does the name become just a bunch of plastic letters stuck on some sheet metal and have zero meaning?

I love your plastic letter stuck on sheet metal zero meaning vehicle. Looks very sharp.

I wonder who decides that. You or the OEM owning brand name.
Maybe it makes sense to call every one of toyota's vehicles TNGA then?

I would say when it becomes a watered down unibody with no off-roading chops.

Say what you want about the 4Runner. Of course it's no 70 or 80 series. But, aside from the Wrangler and maybe the Bronco, what else is a better off-roading platform that's available in the US market?

if reliability is of no concern, Range Rover and G Wagon. The Ranger Rover is an unreliable POS out of warranty but they are no slouch offroad.

There is also the Armada siblings. Somewhat bloated now but still haven't lost all their Patrol roots yet.

So, in your opinion, these are all better off-roading platforms than the 4Runner?

I don't know a ton about any of them, but at a glance I don't think I'd lump the Armada in that statement. It seems a bit big, and has independent front and rear suspension.

The G wagon looks badass, but is also 3x as expensive. And, the Range Rover is even more expensive than that.

But, here I am going off topic again.

I guess the point is that the 4Runner still has decent off-road capability, even if it's not an old SFA rock crawler.

Speaking of tacomaworld.com, for members from there and that live in the DFW area, Plano headquarters now has a 2024 5th gen Tacoma TRD Pro in Terra Orange on the ground.

The color is darker in person than in the photos, keep your eyes open for it over the next couple of weeks, it will be driving around the area, please post a photo of it if you see it.

I vote for going off topic and staying off topic. Let's start with the Mercedes-Benz Unimog. Now there's an off-road capable vehicle.

Did someone say the Range Rover is good off road? I think I just saw a shooting star. Or was that J-Lo winking at me?

From what I understand, the only thing this thread is speculating about is what clothing the 4Runner will wear. The platform is known. The choice of engines and transmissions are known and even those can probably be narrowed down to the I4 and the 10 speed.

For months, this thread has also discussed the 4Runner's cousins, the GX and Land Cruiser.

    Why:
    1. They share the same TNGA-F platform architecture.
    2. They will share similar powertrains.
    3. Their release order of GX, Land Cruiser and last, the 4Runner, allows you to get some advanced insight to what the 4Runner will be.
    4. And finally, for everyone of your friends and acquaintances, you swear are diehard 4Runner people, you will see some of them buying a Land Cruiser or GX this time around.
All of these above elements are related to 4Runner Speculation.

While we wait to get a glimpse at 4Runner clothing later this year, for now, we can see what clothing its cousin, the Land Cruiser will wear. So while we're speculating, what do you think the mystery extension is below the frame, between the front wheel and possible crossmember?

Not the range rover. But the land rover defender. Those are pretty darn impressive offroad. But I'm not sure the land rovers are reliable.

That was my first theory as well but it does not make sense to have an obstruction hang so low on a 4x4. The rearmost element appears to be a crossmember, but looking at the new Tacoma and GX frames below, of which the 4Runner and Land Cruisers will mirror, the crossmembers are flat.

Assuming it is not just an artifact from the teaser photo, the only explanation I can come up with is maybe they mounted the drivetrain lower in the frame on the Land Cruiser to minimize the interior trans/driveshaft tunnel hump at the sacrifice of ground clearance, but that does not make sense either.

It looks like Tacoma4g snagged the first photos of the Terra Orange Tacoma TRD Pro at Plano Headquarters. My source just let me know it was there and that it will be out driving in the DFW area for the next couple of weeks, keep your eyes open.

Hopefully we get the 4Runners and Land Cruisers in that color.

The link says solar octane. hich is good, because that would be disappointing if the terra orange was that bright.

Good call! That's exactly what it is. Still not sure what's up with the 3 fins though. Do people put racks on top of trucks or just the beds? I'd think that could get in the way potentially
