Yes, I feel good about being able to turn it without being concerned it’s going to break.

My first vehicle with a composite filter housing was a '07 VW GTI, and the only way to remove it was a 19 mm socket. It cracked on my second oil change because the diameter of the "nut" was less than half that of the housing.

It's all about gearing, and I think on the 4R, Toyota did a good job with the design and requiring that the least amount of pressure be applied to the housing to remove it. I really think the composite housing will easily last the life of the vehicle.

I have used them for years on all my log trucks and every personal rig I’ve owned since I found out about them and never had an issue.

On my Tacoma with full skids, I just had a hole directly below the valve. I used the one with a nipple and added a few inches of clear tube that I could tuck back up into the skid. Have the same setup to install on the 4Runner when I do the first oil change.

To each is their own, I know when I first used the brand new tool I bought from Toyota to change the oil on my Tacoma, I was concerned about the plastic, so I replaced with the metal housing and am no longer concerned.

i bought my 4Runner used. i've seen enough mention of them being damaged by incompetent techs that i figured $30 is worth it for peace of mind.

I have the metal filter housing ready to go. Just in case. If or when I need it it's on the shelf. I'll keep on with the stock housing until there is a problem. Even a spare plastic housing might not a bad thing to have sitting around.

Yeah, if the original looks to be in good shape I'll just store it in the basement.

I like your thinking. Do you think a similar setup (the oil filter housing nipple that comes with a new filter and a short length of clear tubing to prevent messes when draining the filter housing) would be useful if left in the vehicle for the next oil change?

I’d be interested in seeing the parts you are thinking of using. I’m only at 4K miles, so I haven’t even looked at the filter set up yet.

I figure that if the oil filter package comes with a nipple to drain the filter, you could get some clear tubing to put on it to direct the oil without it just dropping straight down and splashing...

the filter element does come with the plastic nipple. i might add tubing to it when the time comes to prevent spillage. i've got a ton of extra i use with my brewing/kegging equipment.

Do the non-Toyota filters, i.e. STP, also come with that drainage nipple?

no idea. i think an OEM filter is like $10. i'll just grab one from the local toyota dealer before i do the change in the next month or so.

So, do I still have to swap out the center piece from the plastic housing?

Yeah, not really worried about oil volume/displacement. More about structure/support for the element.

So I dug out my new filter, new metal housing and a spare fumoto valve. If they make one with the correct thread size, it will work. BUT NOT WITH THE NIPPLE………….. With the nipple you would not be able to get the socket tool on to remove the housing. I’m going to do some research on the one listed above to see how it is locked closed. The lock on the fumoto and that I have used them on engines that cost as much as a new 4Runner is why I trust them so much.

You talking about putting a fumoto valve on the oil filter housing?

    @Thatbassguy @Jynarik

When you installed the Fumoto valve did you dry fit the washer/gasket? I know to apply some oil to the o-rings for the filter housing.

    thx!

I installed the Fumoto and metal filter housing this past weekend. Fumoto went on dry as it has on my other vehicles. No leaks at all.

I installed the Fumoto valve and metal oil filter housing a few weeks ago. Luckily no bolts had been stripped and the original plastic housing looked good. I saved the plastic housing even though I’ll probably never need it now.

I probably didn’t need to swap out the taller center piece for the oil filter element, but did so anyway. The height difference was almost negligible.
