    That's a good website! I've used it for researching and comparing tires, and they have a nice tire pressure calculator for those running a different size or load range than stock.

    Ok I got a dilemma.

    The Yokohama MT G003 still have not been delivered. Discount tire said they’d give me the cooper stt pro in 315/70r17 and match the same low price as the yokos. So $400 off the set.

    What do I do? Wait for the Yokohamas or get the coopers?

    I hear those are fantastic off-road, but pretty noisy on pavement. I wouldn't want them for a daily driver, personally.

    Noise doesn’t bother me. Father in law had the coopers on his Ram and they took a beating. They’re also 3 lbs lighter. But I Yokohamas show up tomorrow I can decide either one for the same price.

    Got a quote from nitro for 4.88s. I’m seeing how the V8 handles the 35s before I commit to a regear, but I’m sure I’ll do it anyways.

    I wouldn’t say it is about how the engine can handle it as much as the entire drivetrain. Imagine putting a 200lb guy on a kids bike. The gears are going to have a lot of stress.
    I bet a transmission would cost just as much as an engine. Idk what gears you have in there now but heck if you do regear you might as well get front and rear lockers with your regear. I can attest it is nice not having to deal with Toyota lockers and just push a button and boom they are on (ARB for the win).

    I know a few GX owners running 35s on stock gears without issues and they wheel hard.

    With that said I totally agree with there being more stress on the drivetrain. I will regear for sure but that won’t be right away. I want to see how it handles without it. I tow a trailer and carry a lot of gear (2 and 6 year old haha) so regearing to 4.88s is a must.

    Yeah that is what I have. Probably too much but I am usually loaded down. According to the article 4.88 seems good.

    Ya 4.56 brings the gears back to stock ratio with 35s for the GX460. But with the weight of the tires plus all the gear I want to step up to 4.88 per nitro recommendation

    I get all of that. But, it depends on how you use and drive you vehicle as well. If I towed heavy or often, I would surely be in more of a hurry to regear. I also don't drive aggressively (usually).

    If I was doing 35's with the 4.0, I would certainly regear.

    It's weird that they put a lower geared differential in the GX. My gearing would be almost corrected to stock if I switched to GX gears with these 295's.

    Part of the reason I'm not in a rush to regear is that there don't seem to be options for a 4.10, which I think would be ideal for my setup. I would prefer to use ECGS, and I only see 4.56 and 4.88's on their website. It really seems like a 4.10 would be ideal for folks who are running 285's and maybe a little extra weight.

    It is true. If you have a pavement princess that doesn’t go off-roading, doesn’t tow anything, and just gets you back and forth to work you are “probably” fine. But I would not recommend going off-roading, towing much, or adding a ton of weight with stock gears. Then I would argue I wouldn’t make any modifications at all. Leave it stock tire size or maybe go a tiny bit bigger (surely not 35”) because the wear and tear on other components (suspension, brakes, power steering, etc) will suffer.

    At any rate I am looking forward to seeing the ride when you are done. When are you getting the 35’s @captrussia253?

    Pavement Princess, lol!

    I probably off-road as much or more than most folks here. Full armor, sliders, a few hundred LBS of constant weight. I'm closing in on 70K miles, 40K with mods. No signs of any issues yet.

    295's are only ~6% larger than stock. The 4runner was built to tow and haul. Everything is engineered for a little extra stress.

    An article explaining why I MUST regear, written by a company that sells parts to regear might be a bit biased. Just my thoughts.

    I'm not trying to say people shouldn't regear. Especially folks who beat on their vehicles.

    But, I'm pretty sure that my drivetrain can handle tires that are a little bigger than stock. I'm willing to bet there are numerous 4runner owners who have run 285's on stock gears long term without any issues. If it were a real problem, there would be threads here about failures.

    That's what I'd probably do. I want to go 35" for my next set of MT's, but still run 285's in Winter. So, I would prefer to find something that's a good compromise.

    I see old toyotas all the time on a stock 22re power train with 35”+ tires screaming across town. I think my rig will be okay with oversized tires (to a point):rofl:

    I just talked to a buddy that has a 1st gen 4runner running 35s and a 80s toyota pickup on 37s. But then again those things were built bulletproof back in the day

    Well after over two weeks of waiting Discount Tire called to say fedex has "lost" my Yokohamas...

    With that said they offered 315/70r17 stt pros and matched the yokos price! Getting them on tomorrow morning!!!

    Time to save up for a re-gear hahaha

    Just drove around town and the acceleration is nice with the V8. Still plan to regear with 4.88s for sure.
