I don't think the brand makes a difference.

I was just saying that heavier oil isn't going to make the engine quiet.

Honestly, I don't know if I would want to use oil that would make a known noisy engine run quietly. I would think something was wrong if it was quiet.

I really dont know why i dont use schaeffers...this oil is great stuff.
My BIL is a diesel mechanic...some years ago a schaeffers rep showed up at his place n went thru his spiel. He invited him to seminar n i went along. They did several pressure test n other test..open bearing, rod bearing, etc.
Needless to say....Schaeffers won out. Amsoil,Redline,Royal Purple, etc were all tested.
Im very skeptical with these test for one reason or another..but after my bil n i duscussed it we were firm believers...jmo

I'm sure it's fine oil. I stick to inexpensive oil because I change every 5K. I used Mobil 1 every 10K on my previous 4runner with no issues for 257K miles.

Does anyone know when Toyota switched from recommending 5-30 to recommending 0-20? Did the motor actually change at all at the same time? I admit to being skeptical about 0-20, that it's sometimes been spec'd just to help get a bump in EPA MPG even though the engine was really designed for something heavier.

I think Subaru did that several years ago with their 2.5L. So I ran 5-30 in mine.

I can't say for sure, but one guy suggested it was 2016.

I suspect it is CAFE BS but I continue to run 0W-20. In Puerto Rico, 0W-20, 5W-20, and 5W-30 are all recommended at any temperature range.

Interesting. I'm not aware of any significant changes to the engine (or any at all) around 2016. I could imagine switching to 5-30. Espec if I see much consumption between oil changes. I think mine lost about 1/8th of a quart in its first 5000 miles (no big deal of course). Not sure how's it's doing now -- seems still at the exact top line on the dipstick in the 1500-2000 miles since.

The zero bothers me less than the 20.

In that case maybe this motor really is designed for 0-20....

I'm sure the engineers know what they're doing -- or at least know better than me. But 20 wt just seems so thin...

I guess whoever said that on another thread was mistaken. I had said that the dual-VVT-I 1GR's all called for it, but someone claimed it was changed in '16.

I don't think it's going to cause any issues. But, as I said in the other thread; If there isn't a mechanical difference between the US and Puerto Rico engines, than there's no reason we shouldn't be able to run 5W-20 or 5W-30.

I am guessing the only reason they insist on 0W-20 in the US is to squeeze out another .003 MPG.

use that 5-30wt oil in the warm weather ..Toyota manual states in a warm area above 50F this oil 5-30wt will keep the noise lower..
in massachusetts yesterday the air temp was 70F and I started it 1PM .. engine noise was much lower ..
in the cold temps below 30F it does make ticking noise for a few min... but the toyota oil did reduce the noise 0-20wt and had moly 850PPM in it ...

    9003D Supreme 9000™ Full Synthetic 5W-30 had 357PPM moly in it ..

My 19 Sounds like a header or exhaust noise but you only can hear it in the cab, idle, park, and low rpm 0-35. Dealer said normal sound. Wondering if anyone else's sounds like an exhaust pressure echo or vibration sound in cab only.‍♂️ 45k miles

Have a 2020 Limited with 10,500 miles. This is my first 4Runner and had posted this same concern to the forum. These engines are a bit noisy and can be a cause of concern. Evidently the construction engineering is the reason for the “noise”. My 4Runner after 2 years runs great and has no issues
Check out “Car Care Nut” channel on YouTube. He has a lot of very good and interesting videos on Toyotas. He is a Toyota/ Lexus master technician. Look for a picture of the opened (covers removed) timing chains in the engine compartment. It’s pretty amazing and visually you can see the reason why there’s some noise. Hopefully this helps.

These engines are pretty noisy, Toyota didn't put much money into NVH suppression with them, it seems. For the longest time after purchasing mine I was convinced there was something internally wrong with the motor However, I bought it with 80,000 on it, and at almost 150K it still runs fine.

It's hard to tell without actually hearing yours, but I imagine you're talking about a tick tick tick tick tick type sound. Mine definitely makes it, and I've heard many others that make that same noise.

Supposedly this motor is very reliable, but like most other things about the 4Runner, just kind of crude.

No its not the tik, its more deep like an exhaust sound. You can only hear it in the cab. Outside and with hood popped its extremely quite and steady. Almost not much of a tik to it. But in the cab its very noticable like a low diesel thud sound.

could be the muffler is inside the plates or the cat converter ....
run the engine under the runner then use a sound tool like a rubber tube to in your ear and the other orifice to sound the noise ..
    the muffler shield ?

I got under it and tried finding it and checked for anything lose. Problem is you can't hear it under the vehicle or in the engine bay. Onlwhile sitting in the cab‍♂️ and of course Toyota just says they are noisy.

I have M1 in the sump currently and it is much noisier than my other oil changes over the years.......I use whatever is cheapest. I don't care, I know it's protected perfectly. See you at 300k.

As previously said the robust timing chains that give the 4.0l it some of it's inherent reliability also makes a certain amount of noise that is normal. Especially 5th gen 1GR-FE4 dual VVT-I. I use the called for ilsac gf-6 motor oil for my 2022 and it does seem to make a difference noise wise. It always seems to be quieter with fresh oil. Change my oil every 6 months regardless of mileage as per severe service guidelines stated in the owner's manual. Not to open another online ****show but I was quite happy with how quiet my new engine was with the bottled Pennzoil Ultra Platinum I put in compared to the dealer's bulk synthetic oil they supplied.
