I got the radio working by plugging the old in and out. Not sure what I did. Still not sure what the switch does but I'm not going to mess with it, yet.

I do wonder how to grease the driveshaft if I cant reach the zerk fitting with the grease gun!?

    Thanks for the help.

You might be able to turn the fitting just enough to reach it.

So over the last few months I’ve been doing maintenance on the truck. It’s been running great outside of the ABS which I recently removed. I recently replaced my power steering hoses (pressure and return) on my '93 4runner 2wd and in the process, I broke the air valve. I ended up gluing it back and putting it back on since it was only the ends where the hoses connect. I put back in and now it's running rich (I assume since there is lots of black smoke coming out of the exhaust), it idles quite low, and it's making a ticking noise from the back of the air intake. I capped off the air valve and the hoses and it ran ok until it warmed up then ran rough. I went to the junkyard today and picked up a used air valve from an 87 corolla and it's still running rough.
I recently changed all the accessory belts and removed the ABS actuator.
I plan on buying a new PS air valve, any thoughts on the Dorman brand?
Also, any thoughts on how should I go about diagnosing what may be causing the rough idle and richness?

Great looking 4runner. Looks like no rust on body.
    I have 2005 with 150,000 miles.
How many miles on the 1993?

I tried switching to synthetic and got "drips" under the car right way.
I changed back to conventional oil and 6 months later the drips have almost stopped.
    Still looking at this weekly.

If it were me, I'd try to find out what type of engine oil the last owner used, and what is in the tranny now - and use the same fluids. Toyota brand - especially in the tranny - I would assume.

Personally, I would not risk it on synthetic oil.

Tranny can probably take Type T-IV. Ask a dealer.

    Hey Captsolo,
Thanks, it currently has 205K miles. Looking forward to adding many more miles. Once I figure out why its running rough.

I'm not a mechanic so I'd recommend you find a good one for that miss or "rough" running. Someone with a scan tool, but I'm not even sure your '93 can be diagnosed with them. Nevertheless, a good mechanic can figure it out for you.

    Good luck.

How is the coolant level? Does it hold steady? Any overheats?
Don't let it overheat. Those pictures of the engine and the whole 4runner look great.

The coolant level is normal and it does not overheat. I've been mindful of the temperature every time I drive it.
I'm going to get the PS air valve, PCV, replace the vacuum hoses, and clean the intake. Hopefully, this helps it run better. Thanks for the support.

Just started browsing through this thread. Gotta say, that '93 with 205K miles looks FAR better than my '92 with 155K. The condition is almost hard to believe!?!

I had the same problem trying to grease the zerks on my 2005.

Try turning the crank or roll the car a few inches.

I was able to get the grease gun fitting to connect to the zerk but could not push any grease in.
    It was like "locked"!
I may take it to a shop I know can do it. My zerks could be "shut closed" - as I never greased them.

Having said that everything associated with the DS was straight and tight - and I'm not worried.

You have to be careful when you grease some of those zerks.

    Toyota builds such tough stuff.

Yours zerks may not have ever been greased either.

I'm going to try again this weekend, maybe using some needle nose pliers to move it. I'm not too worried about it. The previous owners took care of it but I would like to access it.
    Thanks for the suggestions.

    Update
A few things I've done to the 4runner:
    • Spark plugs and wires- NGK
    • Distributor cap and rotor - Denso
    • new O2 sensor
    • most of the vacuum lines with the LC engineering kit
    • PS air control valve
    • new fuel filter
    • new PCV valve
    • added an oil catch can
    • cleaned the plenum and gasket (had lots of black deposits)
    • cleaned the Cold Start Injector (also lots of black deposit on it)
    • cleaned the throttle body and new gasket ( it had oil in it when I took it off)
    • speed bleeders on the front calipers

I ended up replacing the distributor cap and rotor twice since the first one (Intermotor brand) broke.
The middle piece (looks like its made out of graphite) of the distributor cap broke.

I took off the cap because I noticed some oil around the outside of the distributor and on top of the alternator. I think its the distributor gasket that needs to be replaced.

Also, I'm still trying to figure out the brakes, I've bled them 3 times and my pedal still sinks all the way, I think it might be the master cylinder. Any suggestions?
