Another lift & tire question - I swear I searched....

What’s interesting is to see how close even stock tires are to the body at full lock. They’re close, so that’s the challenge of fitting larger ones. Jeeps and Broncos don’t have this problem.

 

Yeah. I am a bit worried about the tires not clearing tomorrow. My biggest concern is if it will rub against the control arm. 285 should be less than an inch wider (on each side of the rim) than the 265 so it should be ok...

As for the Jeeps and Broncos being “better” - I have a lot more faith in Toyota’s engineering. A lot of things on a Toyota are designed with reliability and durability favored over other design qualities. Jeeps frequently suffer from death wobble, and parts often need to be replaced and wear out quicker. New gladiators have same issues plus the transfer case issues. New 4cyl turbo engine and the Mild hybrid are all having issues... Bronco, on paper, is a superior machine - but I’ll credit it more when I see it CONSISTENTLY last as long as a 4Runner does - with similar level of maintenance.

Are they known to rub with stock wheels and 285's?

 

Yes, Ironman UCAs. Not for certain whether they’ll rub. I was told no - but haven’t seen anyone confirm yet. Gonna find out tomorrow.

 

I agree ThePnshr3r, that’s why I never said better, haha. But they do have a design that allows for bigger tires. Btw, the lift looks great, I hope it handles as good as it looks. You don’t necessarily have to fill the wheel, imho, and I recognize that this is a subjective issue. The reason it looks odd at the moment has more to do with the anemic car tires they put in stock 4 Runners. Put a nice good looking luggy tire on there, and it will look good even one size bigger. You’re making this too hard on yourself. Keep it simple, it will look great.

Lift with stock tires got me like but I can dig it. Haha.

 

Tire install and alignment complete. Here it is as it stands right now. No running at full lock at either side but it looks like it will catch on the front bumper when tire pushes deep into the wheel well. A simple liner mod and bumper cut should fix it. Back side seems to be clearing just fine. And, spare fits fine, too.
Also - as for the tires - they’re @ 36-37psi and zero vibration or issues @ up to 80mph. I ran out of road in Mexico and had to slow back down

I’ll do a full build post later sharing more details for others interested in the lift/tire combo.

Yes. I was hoping to get right to 4 - but, ironman spec was 3.8, too. Both sides are close to each other too and (as you stated already) truck rides amazing and tracks straight and true.

 

You had plenty of tire clearance on the UCAs, too. Nice.

 

Thanks. I am super happy with how everything turned out and am really impressed with everything from Ironman. From the communication with sales, and then tech support, and then the actual product design and quality... Nose dive is gone, body lean in corners is reduced, ride feels more solid and stable but definitely not harsh. Super satisfied with all.

Did you measure before and after fender heights? I know tire size plays a role, but with a little math we can figure out the suspension lift height.

 

Tire size doesn't matter if you center of hub to fender.

 

Yeah, I usually do driveway to fender so I didn't think of that.

 

I have not measured since tire install and alignment. I will later and let you know. But before tires lift took me from ~34.5 to ~37” ground to bumper front, and rose ~2” in the back. So lift netted about 3.5” front and 2.5” rear. I expect it to settle right at 3” front and maybe 2.25” rear. Final measurements to follow

 

Tire size does matter. Larger diameter tire will also be taller. Center of the tire will move up accordingly, your measurement fender to ground (or frame to ground) will also increase.

you can see here how tire being taller moves the “center” -(axle) up, too. So, if a tire is 1” taller overall, you are effectively gaining .5” lift.

What does NOT change - is your measurement from axle to the fender.

 

Not if going center of hub to fender. This is why everyone always asks for hub to fender measurements when looking at lift height.

Most are looking for lift #s of suspension not total lift with tires. Of course if I throw 40in tires on there I will have more overall lift that someone going with 33s.

 

Coilover lift I did on 2020 Taco only settled 0.25 inches in the front after a few weeks. Your experience may vary. Either way, looks like you're in pretty good shape.

@ThePnsh3r Forgot to ask, Ironman has different spring rate options based on load, right? Which ones did you go with?

~23.5” hub center to fender

40.5” ground to fender rear
~25” hub center to fender

Just a friendly heads up...Your first measurement looks like 2.5 inches instead of 3.5 inches... I just noticed that.

Your current measurements don't seem to directly compare to the first ones, but I appreciate it nonetheless.

 

You’re correct. Math fail lol - thinking of it now, I may have mistyped the 37 instead of 38.
But looking at just the ground to fender measurements - with tires, it is more like a 3” lift. Or about 2.5” suspension alone. That’s right on as the others have experienced, too (on the lift). Front is adjustable, and numbers that I ended up with is from requested 2” set in the front to match the rear lift in order to maintain factory rake.

Wow, I was surprised to see the comfort stock load springs (front) #TOYO65A are 720 lb springs...I believe stock Toyota springs are 550 lb.

 

this makes me wanna go with 285s so bad....but I really don’t want to do any BMC
