I have searched this forum and I am getting conflicting infos on certain brands, sizes and rubbing.

I bought a brand new 2024 ORP 4Runner. I love cooper discoverer XLT tires as that is what I had on my 2019 Silverado HD (incredible in rain and snow). I want to run the same on the 4runner, but I noticed they only have the Discoverer LTs not the XLTs in the size I need.

Hence this is the question. Can I run 275/17/70 Cooper Discoverer LTs tires on my stock 4runner without any lifts or trimming? Or should I stick to stock?

    Pic of 4runner :)

    Oooh look, another mod.....

You can go all the way up to 285's without rubbing or trimming. I swapped out my factory Dunlop's the DAY I bought my SloRunner with Falken Wildpeaks. I chose the exact same size, but they do rub when I reverse and turn the wheel all the way to the right. It only happens if I turn right. Never left, and never if I'm going forward to the right.

    Anywho.. Here are before/after pictures:

Same tires/size here, no rubbing at all. FYI, I only see the after pic.

Edit: before pic now shows up...

I ran BFG KO2 275/70R17 on stock suspension + stock TRD ORP wheels. But OP seems to have TRD Pro wheels, due to their offset I think 275/70R17 tires would rub.

I switched 275/70R17 Load E to 285/70R17 Load C (with a lift and minor trimming) in a very short time as I found Load E tires are too firm for my & my family taste.

This is what I am afraid of.. I do not want rubbing... I guess sticking to stock size is prob a safe bet.. especially since the 275s are like 1/2 inch bigger... I am just looking for that beefy tire so when I go to my farm I do not worry about getting stuck.. worried these street looking tires will get me in trouble especially in mud.

Get a good AT tire replacing the stock. You don't have to upsize to fix the street tire problem. Look at the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss. Lots of great reviews on that both on and off road.

Keeping the weight down on the tire and getting a load rating that works for you is important.

Don't forget the Load Rating. 255/80R17 only comes with Load E.

Before I got 275/70R17 Load E I had 265/70R17 Load C. While I was driving off the tire shop with Load Es back of my head said "did I make a bad decision? The ride is rough even with stock soft suspension". Few days later I regret when my wife really dislike the ride.

If you have a tire shop who can accept a return if you don't like the tires that would be great.

Also maybe to think availability and no of options.

For example if you search 255/80R17 in discount tire you have 16 tire options vs if you search 265/70R17 you have 163 tire options and also sub divide to 4 Load Ratings. Similar story for 285/70R17 -

I am thinking of getting them after some threads suggested no rubbing, worth consideration. And Im liking the look.

Thank you for the detailed post with pics. I definiately want the coopers discover AT3s. I ran coopers on all my trucks and SUVs and love them. Never thought about ride comfort with different loads. I assume my stock 2024 tires are load C then? What does the TRD Pro come with, also load C?

Didn’t read OP’s post. Did he ask about optional sizes and if it’s going to rub? :D

Well I decided to go with Cooper STMAXX in 235/80R17 [9" x 31.8 vs 10.7 x 31.85] tires since I had same type and size on my Jeep Grand Cherokee and was very happy with them. Being narrower, but same height they look great, ride great and have improved gas mileage some. I have actually been averaging 21 mpg. Absolutely no rubbing.

You will rub with 275/70r17 depending on your alignment. I run those in Falkens. If you push them all the way forward, you will need to trim a teeny bit of the bumper lip. A happy medium spot in the alignment might exist, but a dremel is faster

Why can’t you use the stock size? If it’s a new vehicle this problem doesn’t even exist yet. Maybe after 40-50k miles when you wear out these tires.

Im happy with the 275 /55 17’s Ko2s. A shade over 32” and no rub on OR wheels in any situation.

I like the look of the beefy Coopers is why. It will match all my other trucks too. Plus I own a farm 390 miles from my home, the coopers have no drone on the highway and they look and act beefy. The farm is 200 acres and has a bunch of trails full of mud and such and I am worried the stock tires will get my 4runner stuck. Case in point, my buddy came to visit me in a brand new Range Rover that had street tires and he got stuck. I guess I could just get the original size and be done with it and not worried about rubbing, etc.

Makes perfect sense. Good quality tires can make you or break you on rough terrain. 200 acres sounds amazing.
