I am new here and I am considering purchasing a few Rotopax canisters.

I have heard that some people do not like the Rotopax and have had them stolen even with the optional key system.

Anyone out there have any issues?

The guy in the video needs to learn not to hold his feelings back. I couldn't tell how he really felt about the Rotopax.

Some people have a low threshold of frustration and don't deal well with adversity. I try remind myself that it's good to know who they are before getting mixed up with them.

Regarding the original topic, Rotopax aren't perfect, but I have reservations about the alternatives, too.

IMG_4949.jpg I haven’t had any issues with mine. Getting close to 2 years with them. I have 3 rotolox, 1 gas and 2 water tanks.

My only frustration with them is that each lock has its own key so I get to carry 3 separate keys with me

The lock cylinders do have a lifetime warranty too.

IMG_3062.jpg I’m carrying a RotoPax 4 gal gas can on a swing out spare tire carrier. To “slow down” a thief, in addition to the RotoPax lock, I use a short cable lock threaded through the gas can, spare tire wheel and the tire carrier.

This may not stop a determined thief with the right tools but will slow them down and likely deter them from trying. Anyway, that’s about all you can do….

    Cheers,
    Bob

Fuel cells (plastic) for boats work really well for offroad. They are designed to lay down on their side or carry upright by handle so the are exceptionally easy to secure to racks. They also have an inexpensive fuel line / primer bulb that works great for transferring fuel without taking cell off of the rack. I’ve carried them on external racks before and prefer them over traditional Gerry Cans and Rotopax for design and use. Rotopax seem to be made for aesthetic appeal. They are abnormally expensive and are very small capacity for their footprint. I think any fuel cell is vulnerable to theft if left on the vehicle unattended. That is a society problem more than a fuel cell design problem.

How often do you have to vent the gas canisters?

I did some more digging on Youtube and found a way to lock the Rotopax. The reason I want to have a secure way to lock my Rotopax is due to spending time in Philly.

    I have the same question.

Venting the gas canisters every 1000 feet of elevation change (if I recall the manual correctly) is a no go for me. I'm still looking for a low profile way to carry some spare fuel.

If I had a rear swingout for the spare tire I'd use the Trailed 6-Gallon "Spare" Tank
    https://trail4runner.com/2020/05/30/trailed-spare-tank-install-for-5th-gen-4runner/

Alas for now my 34" spare fits under the rig just fine. I'm just careful about route planning so I don't get too much fuel anxiety on trips :D

Yeah, that's unrealistic in mountainous terrain. It would be nice if they offered some kind of automatic pressure equalization cap. It wouldn't have to maintain total equilibrium, just let air in or out if the pressure difference exceeds a threshold.

Fuel anxiety is such a problem when you get horrible gas mileage on the trail. Also when I am stuck in traffic with the fuel gauge about to hit empty. :(

I’ve had them for about 5 years. Probably wouldn’t do it again.

have had one explode. Warranty questioned me for at least a week on whether or not I burped it daily. They finally replaced it. The new one’s spout broke. It’s marketed as self venting, but it does not.

also had to get a new gasket warrantied on the new one for leaking

the water canister is the only thing that has lasted me.

ive never locked them and never had an issue.

    +1 for Wavian.

Their Nato style fuel tanks and their water jugs are the sh*t. They don't store as easy as Rotopax but for fuel or water storage they work 10 times better.

His broken lock demonstration was a bit like OJ trying on the glove. $50 says he could have done it if he wanted to.

once a day as recommended when I have it full. I always empty it after our trips so it’s usually full during them or empty for daily driving.

Im also in Florida, so no altitude issues. Temp fluctuations have also had minimal effect for me personally.

I am located in New England area so I bet I would be venting them on the daily. The water pack seems to be a good option.

Am leaning towards the Wavian too but the Frontrunner mounting system for NATO style jerry cans do not give me much confidence. Any good mounting solutions for the Wavians? Using a prinsu/sherpa style rack and have a ladder too.
