    I’m fine with an AEB mandate. It’s not pleasant when it engages nor a guaranteed non-crash so I’m doubtful folks likely will be thinking of leaning on that for their next message. (now “Autopilot” or other assists however…)

    Those that do bust out the phone anyway though, I know they’re going to plow into my behind or side so any mitigation I’ll take. Looking forward as it trickles down to older Nissan’s in a decade or two.

    add in post-pandemic drivers whether exercising less care or just younger, less enforcement, an aging driving population without alternative transportation options in much of the country and I think it’ll be a net positive.

    Get Honda’s phantom alert issue under control and I’d say we’re sitting pretty. (Haven’t seen that in my SO’s HR-V though yet personally)

    I have mine set on the lowest sensitivity and the times it beeps are understandable. If anything I’d prefer it alert less when approaching vehicles leaving the lane I’m in but I also understand it’s technically less safe on my part should anything unexpected happen.

    I’d trade it for better lighting enforcement and regulation in a heartbeat but of course that’s probably somehow not a comparable issue.

    Full autopilot in every car on the road is farther away than we think. It was really hyped up last decade as an any day now thing but the industry has learned though experimentation that its a MUCH harder problem to solve than anyone thought. Following the path of the road (radar/lidar) and even reading street signs and such with computer vision is very doable - the challenge is reacting to the unexpected and the decision making process. If you have a school bus cut you off and at the same time an elderly person walks in front of the car from the other side, how do you program the computer to decide who takes the hit?

    I think Tesla autopilot is going to remain in some sort of beta stage for a really long time and hte day when everybody else has these and no longer requires the driver to touch the steering wheel to confirm they are awake is probably going to be long after I retire....

    Again, reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit and you are making implications off of a generalized, not specifically directed statement.

    I didn’t say “just” my kids, I used them as a factual example. And the children of the magenta is exactly what it is, young aviators with a lower skill set than the generation before them because they weren’t taught any better and lack the ability to think outside the box. The same goes with tech dependency in vehicles.

    Judging by a lot of your 11 total posts, you appear to be easily triggered by other’s opinions. It all makes sense now.

    Oh absolutely, it's a never-ending stream of edge cases and is kind of annoying to see so much effort put into it when we already have varying types of trains and buses.

    I am of the opinion that the "Autopilot" and Full-Self-Driving thing are varying degrees of scam and disappointed how long that's been going on even as there are faint glimmers of brilliance and cool as is most tech things. Not to mention being boxed in by the dropping of lidar. (unrelated note, latest news is that the Supercharger and vehicle development teams were canned so looks like Tesla is getting the Twitter special now...)

    Works just enough to be dangerous!

    "In 2022, the number of pedestrians killed rose 0.7% to 7,522, the most since 1981." When I lived in Albuquerque we led the nation in per capita for pedestrian deaths and I know two people who lost nice vehicles impacting pedestrians. What goes largely unreported is that most of these pedestrians are inebriated.

    Seems as we add more safety features more issues arise. And i am sure the legalization of THC in more densely populated states has a lot to do with it too. CT has seen a huge increase in driving accidents since it was legalized (right after Covid lockdowns BTW).

    That shit absolutely blows my mind. The amount of people driving and actively smoking is insane. They’re literally driving impaired. One of my buddies is a local cop and he was telling me that they don’t even bother citing it anymore because the amount of people doing it would just clog up the system and there’s no way to justifiably enforce it without utilizing every available resource which takes away from all the other BS they have to deal with on a daily basis.

    Maybe they need to raise the fines. Or, treat it just like a DUI.

    I have nothing against THC. I wish Wisconsin would legalize it, even though I don't personally like it.

    The thing I don't understand is why some people need to get baked before they even start their day. I've busted people smoking up first thing in the morning at job sites. If you can't function without that shit, you have a problem.

    I agree with you 100%. Do it at home. Public isn’t the place. I had a neighbor that lost their house because they couldn’t find jobs that would allow them to smoke so they just sat around getting high all day until the sheriffs showed up to make them leave. I don’t understand the mindset.

    Everything I've seen says the opposite.

    Getting the legs taken out from under you and going into the windshield isn't great, but getting hit in the torso where your organs are then pushed down where you'll get run over is even worse. This is IIHS on the subject. You can watch the fortnine video if you want where he hits a dummy in a truck vs a car (moment 3:23 and 2:49 respectively), I think if it were a live person they might catch themself before hitting their head on the hood, the truck hits you everywhere all at once and you'll likely hit your head when you fall to the ground anyway.

    And there is no debate that you're less likely to see a pedestrian when you're up higher, especially smaller individuals who might be nearly invisible if they're within a couple of feet of the car.

    I want to see the data on how many pedestrians get hit because they aren’t paying attention to traffic. Now, with that said, there’s absolutely no excuse for a driver that is paying attention to hit a pedestrian that’s paying attention.

    There are certainly more distracted pedestrians, I got some airpods recently and with their noise cancelation (on by default) I heard cars much later than I would with even regular earbuds. Another problem are these new electric bikes and scooters.

    It's a fantastic development, but so many owners drive irresponsible, breaking traffic laws that cyclists already did but at much greater speeds while being completely silent. A lot of them wearing no helmet too. They'll go onto sidewalks to avoid a light and then rejoin traffic. It's a total nightmare if it's a big city, especially those rentals where tourists with no idea about traffic laws can rent an e-vehicle with no PPE.

    Even Tesla, the king of state of the art, dependable ”full self driving” technology have cars run full speed into stopped firetrucks on the interstate, or go underneath semi trailers on occasion. They also drive off cliffs, but that example is probably not fair to bring up since it has nothing to do with stopping for vehicles or pedestrians. Having cars make decisions for people is hard.

    Seriously though…who does one sue if you were to get rear ended by a vehicle with mandated emergency braking technology.

    And in the opposite situation, who would hold legal responsibility if a vehicle emergency stops in error and causes a wreck?

    This right here! I would assume the victim could sue the vehicle owner for not monitoring the automation, the software provider, Tesla, Musk, the sales person, the mall where the Tesla was purchased, the landowner the mall sits on, the county, the state, and finally the Feds for mandating this bullshit.

    With this new requirement, what is Toyotas approach to making the TSS not freak out when driving in rain?

    I’m assuming that the new law will also demand drivers receive specific training on understanding, monitoring, and defeating automatic systems when necessary. Just to ensure we keep a clear accountability system that absolves manufacturers of any oopsies.

    (I’s read the law myself, but it’s kind of fun broadly speculating about it in a smart-ass way. :p)

    I would go to the opposite direction. No automatic braking. If you hit another car, you pay. If the pedestrian is on his phone while crossing the road, he can get hit. Too bad. People should start taking responsibility for their actions.
    Since we have backup cameras people forgot how to use rearview mirrors. They just wait for the beep. Idiocracy.

    My personal opinion, I would rather deal with a stoned driver, than a drunk driver, and then there is the asshole on there cell phone remote working from the drivers seat. There’s a reason they call it a “drivers seat “

    Great point! I'd expect to see a big overlap in the groups of people who are against universal healthcare because "I don't want to pay for people's bad decisions" and the folks who do not wear a helmet because "It's my choice".

    I work at a merit based company also. As far as I know, none of my actual coworkers are doing this kind of crap.

    But, being in the trades, we share the job-site with all kinds of people.
