I just found one of these locally for very cheap. It has the brackets and mounts right onto my factory cross bars. I don't want to get a roof rack that breaks the bank and would prefer to have a cage like this that I can remove if need be. Wanted to know what kind of experience, if any, anyone here has had with it. Thanks in advance!

Thanks. Picking it up tomorrow. Will post pics once I mount it. Want to black out the silver parts of the factory rack first.

It's a good basket. Look at the thread right below this one for some pics of my old one with the extension. The only thing with all these style baskets is that they are 2-piece, and if you leave them up there all the time, they tend to rust especially around the joint of the two pieces. If yours is a used one with minor rust, I'd clean up any rust with a wire brush, paint it, and then apply gasket maker or silicone to the joints before reassembly.

The fairing is a good place to put stickers... it is reversible so you can flip the "Yakima" label to the back and have a clean slate for sticker awesomeness.

Good point and advice. OP, I highly recommend sealing the joint. I had a similar rack on my old Blazer and rusty water would collect at the joint and leak onto the roof.

Installed Rago brackets and 4" cube ditch lights. Weather tech mats. Cargo net. Cargo mat. Ordered Gobi rack with ladder.
You get what you pay for. If it's a couple of hundred bucks, expect rust.

Appreciate the feedback. I picked it up this weekend. Wish I had the time to clean it up and mount it right away but between work and other things, it might take me a bit. I'll post some pictures once it's ready. Thanks again!

If you end up needing parts for it (or for anything cargo related, really), etrailer.com has the best prices, cheap shipping, and awesome service. They have a whole slew of add ons for the Yak-baskets.

Not to be a smart a$$ but what are you going to carry in this little basket that can't fit inside your vehicle?

Im not sure what the OP would carry but for me, I have a wife and 5 kids so something like this would be perfect for even short trips to the park so that we can throw a double stroller and diaper bags up top since with the 3rd row up there's pretty much no room inside.

Again, not to be a smart a$$, but you need a bigger vehicle if you have a wife and five kids. Maybe an RV or bus. LOL. Sorry. But I get what you are saying.

Cool. If you are in Virginia and ever catch me speeding, my speedometer needs calibrated, I already know. LOL. Kidding.

Haha that's way out of my jurisdiction. I heard VA troopers are ruthless. Heard they even write other troopers. Smh.

Now that we've completely hi-jacked the OPs thread. I will be driving through Maryland and PA on my way to New York in a few weeks. Any chance you will be pulling me over in either of those states?

As your wife has no doubt reassured you about... it's not necessarily about size (and subsequent capacity and needing to carry a lot of shit). I carry gas cans up there... keeps the smell from becoming an issue inside the vehicle. A basket is also a handy place to toss things you carry on the inside when you need more room - like when camping, I sleep in the back, and toss unused weatherproof stuff on the roof to make room for the air mattress.

I actually left NJSP for a local department close to me because of the 5 kids. The schedule gives me a lot more time with the family and quality of life has improved exponentially. So unfortunately, I will not be able to pull your nice 4Runner over.

OP, let's see some pics of the basket!

LOL. Leave my wife out of this. What we talk about is between us, unless she told you about that talk we had.

I get it with the gas cans, but that basket looks so small that, unless you have a Christmas Tree standing straight up or an upright totem pole or something similar, I think you can make it work in the vehicle.

Get the whole basket and leave it on all the time.

Or maybe consider a trailer hitch type carrier https://www.walmart.com/ip/60-Foldi...61937&wl11=online&wl12=30415120&wl13=&veh=sem

No updates yet. Had a sudden family emergency last week and it's been tough to come up with the time. I'm hoping to have it done soon. As soon as I do I'll be sure to post some pics.

I get the argument about the size, but honestly, it's not as small as I thought it would be and with the extension (if i get it) I think it's probably as big if not bigger than some baskets I've seen around here. Also, the basket wasn't a pressing want for me but because of the price i snatched it for, it was almost a no brainer.

Hope all is well with the family now. What do you anticipate carrying in this basket?

Like I said, it wasn't at the top of my list of wants for the car at the moment. That being said, I tow either a boat and a pop up camper so I would be using the rack for coolers, fishing/camping gear, etc. Didn't get it for something specific.

Oh, I see. Unless you just like the look of the basket or you have some money lying around, but couldn't you put the stuff in the boat or the pop up camper. One person said something about gas cans, I get that, and maybe a carcass of some kind, but what else would you carry up there?

The pop up camper doesn't have much space for storage while being towed. I have a grill, coolers, chairs, etc I can surely throw up on the rack. I guess I'll find out once it's up. Believe me, it was a no brainer to get it for the price I found it at.
