    So here’s the pitch…

Found a very good condition 2018 4Runner TRD Premium with 190,000 miles on it.

They’re asking $23,000. It’s hard to justify a car with almost 200k miles for over $20k… Im planning on getting it checked out at a family trusted toyota mechanic.

Before i bring it in for a check-up on the lift, what’s your Thoughts?

Personally, I would take a pass on that. This is my opinion only.

Welcome to the forum, by the way.

I was going to say "Don't do it", then I did some research. On AutoTrader the average price for that truck with those miles is in line with what you found:

LOL, no shit? I just did a random search. Yeah, I'd buy that truck. It looks great. I would double & triple check the maintenance history on it.

The previous owner averaged 730 miles per week (38k per year). I bet those were all highway miles. Highway miles on a vehicle are nothing, and drivers who travel THAT much are kind of meticulous about maintenance.

For an extra 20k you could get one with 0 miles on it. That's what I would do

I should have mentioned this earlier…

The goal with this truck is just to have fun with. Not a DD or a work truck

My yes counts twice, because I'm just that awesome. Ask around.

Don't let strangers on the internet dictate what you should or should not buy. Do your due diligence and go with your gut.

I have a 2013 with 160 kish on it, I wouldn't take any less than 18 for it. So being 5 years newer I don't think that's a horrible price. I don't think I would do it though, while I know that's not terrible miles for this vehicle, it'll go much longer, it just feels like a really high mileage to start ownership at.

If you just want something to have fun with, you could get an 80 series Land Cruiser for that money, and those are way more vehicle that will only appreciate in value.

From all the looking around I’ve been doing,
They’ll probably post it for 33-35k

I would give it a pass. At close to 200k, you are looking at complete suspension overall, pretty much all the hoses, filters ,fluids, brakes etc. There are other parts like the ABS module, evap system etc that will eventually wear out.
    Things add up.
Just to bring it to a base line so you know everything going forward is going to cost. Then there is the condition of the frame for rust etc.
I picked up a 12 year old 4R with around 160k on it and have added about 20k. I serviced everything on it to make sure it lasts me upto 300k. Of course I paid far less that what you are looking at. Also, this is a little too new for that many miles.
Shop around , enough fish in the sea.

At least somebody around here gets it.

I'd rather buy a newer vehicle with high miles than an older vehicle with low miles.

There's definitely going to be some maintenance required, but I wouldn't hesitate if the price is right.

    I say no.

The defining element to me is you are buying an off-road toy rather than a daily driver. The math doesn't work for me. I have to agree with those who have looked at opportunity cost. With 200K on the OD and the options at that price range, I'd buy a used LC.

Were I to pull the trigger on that 2018, maintenance records would be important. I spent fifteen years averaging between 35K and 50K miles per year. When you rack them up that fast, it's really easy to get behind on maintenance.

With everone on this site owning the one of the most reliable vehicles available, why would you say NO, Pass. I say buy it. These trucks maintained properly last for 500K. To pay an additional 20K for a new vehicle that drives and performs the same is insane. If the frame is good this is not a bad deal for a Toyota 4runner. Hoses, suspension, evap, etc. dont add up to $20K.

Just because something is reliable does not mean it's not prone to wear and tear.
There is absolutely no need to buy a 200k vehicle when enough examples are available for close to 30,000 USD with much lower mileage .
Also, I don't recall saying that suspension, evap, hoses and other parts will add up to 20K.
But just to give you an idea, a complete suspension overhaul will cost USD 2000 just in OEM parts. Labour would be anywhere between 1000 to 2000. And at 200k, you suspension will creak and squeak and your shocks will need replacement. And if you do it yourself, then you are investing your time, patience and effort. Put a dollar amount on that!
It makes absolutely no sense to buy a used vehicle that is not rare and already have a laundry list of things that need to be done just to keep it reliable because otherwise at that mileage it will fall apart, Toyota or no Toyota.
