I need to drive an hour to Ikea to return a wooden fixture that sticks out the rear glass window. Will I damage the rear window by doing this?

    There’s ALWAYS a possibility

However, without knowing what your hauling
Safest bet, which 99.9% won’t damage the window

Put the window all the way down n your good

Wrap the end up with a towel or something to prevent possible scuffing on cargo plastic if you care bout that part

How long is it? The center of the back seat will fold down and you can extend it into the front. Depending on length, it might fit inside with the glass closed. It doesn’t look very heavy anyway.

I doubt that would damage the glass, especially if it's down all the way. I don't know if I'd want to drive that far with the window open though, that's a long time to be sucking exhaust fumes in.

If you recline the front passenger seat, will it lay across the seats and rest on the dash without needing to open the rear window?

Nah just put the window all the way down, place a blanket or towel across the sill. Ive transported pieces of lumber like this. Lay the seats down as well if needed.

That exactly how I hauled long things like doors and 2x4s when I was finishing basement. I would add that it's also a good idea to secure load with rope or bungee cords to prevent stuff from shifling left and right.

You will gag from the fumes. Try folding down the back passenger seat and reclining the front passenger seat. I’ve carried 10’ bundles of conduit that way in my old 4R.

I’ve yet to experience the fume getting into the vehicle issue as a lot of guys have experienced. My exhaust is stock, but than again I’m never riding in the back seat.

If I carry anything that’s long and light (PVC sticks, a few pieces of door trim, etc.), I’ll lift it by hand and raise the window to it. I don’t ask the window/regulator to lift weight. And if it’s more than maybe 10 pounds, the window is down all the way. Ten pounds may not be much until you hit a bone-jarring bump. Also, don’t use pressure from the window to hold things snugly and keep them from moving.

Can you disassemble it and lay the pieces on the dash, down the center of the vehicle allowing you to keep the back closed?

    Otherwise this ↓

Yup. Just brought home some 10ft/ 12ft lumber a few weeks ago.

If it's narrow and light, you can lay a towel on the dash and extend it all the way up there. Just don't let 2x4's rest against the windshield and hit a large bump doing this in your Civic. Luckily the windshield replacement wasn't too $$.

I only notice it when getting on the throttle, such as climbing a steep hill or merging on to the highway. If I anticipate these situations I'll briefly close it.

Just cruising at light throttle, no I don't notice it. That doesn't mean there aren't any fumes though.

Egg smell? Do you have your rear windows down all the way? I find if I open halfway or less, I am not able to smell the exhaust. If it’s down all the way I can reliably smell it within 10 min of local stop and go driving

Have you ever noticed right after you wash your 4R the hatch/bumper collects dust way before the rest of the car? It is because of the vacuum created from the “square” back.
Just because you can’t smell it doesn’t mean exhaust is not coming in.
He also said he has 1 hour drive, probably at speed.

I wonder if the trd pro style exhaust (side direction) help with the exhaust + back window issue

My 2nd gen has side exhaust from new.
The roof rack is there for a reason.

I was taking about the rear window only. Yes when I drive it and it’s all the way down I’ve yet to notice any exhaust odor. Could be cause I either the AC or Heat on maybe blowing it away.

I'd have the front windows open enough to keep from sucking in air through the back and send it. Of course secured and if it's long enough add a flag. My only concern would be the rubber bits but I'd just throw down something to protect the hatch en route.

As for the egg smell, driving around in the 4Runner after purchase was my first time encountering such a smell and I found some occasional Italian tuneups took care of it. Since the 4Runner is (relatively) fast compared to previous vehicles I'm hitting redline a LOT less than in previous vehicles.
