Just wondering why I'm paying almost double the rate than my Jeep Wrangler 392 or F150 Raptor? The 4runner is a $40K value vehicle at the end of the day(good day)..
I even did some quote for the 2024 GX550 and its still less expensive than a 2021 ORP..Both liability and collision coverage....why? because 4runner owner are claiming more damage?

Yes I understands age sex location carrier coverage history and almost everything else matters. And that's not the point of this thread. But I just can't figure out why 4Runner, a reletively cheap vehicle not hard to repair and cost less to replace deserves a higher insurance premium across the board.

Maybe this is a good question for your insurance agent?
I always check on insurance rates before purchasing a vehicle. I have been shocked a few times.

    Here are a couple examples:

1993 Honda Accord 4 cylinder car vs 1992 Camaro IROC. I was certain that my insurance would be lower on the Honda. Nope. I didn't realize these were high theft cars. Sad thing was the fuel economy (whole reason I purchased the car) was only a couple mpg better. Pretty sure I owned that Honda for 3 weeks and sold it. One of my biggest disappointment purchases. I purchased another Camaro and grew another mullet. :anonymous:

Another one was between BMW M3, Audi S4, and Acura TSL. Years ranging between 2005-2009. The Acura was the highest (by a lot). I asked why and it was due to repair costs. The example was the headlight assembly had to be changed out as a unit and it was 2500.00+. The BMW M3 and Audi were similar in cost but the Audi was cheaper due to safety features and AWD.

My 2012 GS Corvette is one that really shocked me. One of the cheapest cars to insure. If my memory was correct, 300.00 every 6 months.

    Uhh not really.

Insurance rates are a complicated. They are determined based on:
    - Local loss rates - theft rates, natural disaster/weather loss rates, and driver behavior (do people tend to speed and drive recklessly)
    - Your age (under 25 pays more)
    - Your sex (men pay more)
    - Your marital status (single pay more)
    - Your personal driving record
    - The value of the car (affects comp and collision, minimal effect on liability)
    - The theft and loss rate of that particular car (GX may rate better because they tend to be driven by wealthier people that live in lower crime suburban areas)
    - How much coverage you carry
    - Your credit rating (if your state regulations allow that)
    - State regulation of rates ( - edit to remove borderline statement - )

This graphic and article is very enlightening. Florida for example is a perfect storm where loss rates due to hurricanes, etc are extreme (many insurance companies wont even write policies there) + very minimal state regulation of rate structures.

Massachusetts on the other hand, in spite of its "high tax high cost" reputation is actually the opposite. Gov tightly regulates insurance rates and limits what factors they can consider and the theft/weather loss rates are very low. Im middle aged, married, perfect driving record, stellar credit and I drive a 2023 Pro that they value over $50k. I carry the maximum coverage they offer - 500,000 liability, 100,000 property damage, full replacement cost collision and comp, rental car coverage, etc. Ive been with same insurance company for 25 years and have all my policies (cars, home, life, umbrella) with them. What would you guess I pay?

I went and looked at my current policy to give you an exact number. $885 per year (73/mo). My wifes car on our policy is only $600 as she is lower risk.

Toyota in general and 4Runner in particular have poor security and are easily stolen by modern tech-savvy car thieves. This results in significant premiums over brands that do much better job.

Another data point that hurts. Look at your policy there should be a list in there of vehicles that are on the high theft list.

This is mine. 4Runner is on the list though 2021. But the 22 and 23 are not. May also be a factor in your case.

FYI, Lexus GX460 is on that list as well but they don't have statistics for the 550 yet.

Not sure why you thought making a political statement was wise but the map you posted does not seem to support your assertion. Based on the colors on that map, there seems to be very little correlation to the political leanings of the state. And MA is in the second highest grouping...

This is one of the few good things about living in Massachusetts. Full coverage for me on a '23 4Runner and a '13 Camaro SS is about $1,200 for 12 months, including both cars.

That map hurts. Delaware used to be super cheap when I first started driving in the mid-1980s, but as half of New Jersey moved here in the past couple of decades, our insurance rates have been adjusted to account for their lack of skill, patience, and courtesy. I can't wait to move a couple of time zones west when I retire in four years.

My rates went down when I switched from my 2017 Taco to my 22 Runner. Then went way up when I added my 2 kid to the plan

Because your Jeep Wrangler breaks down more often than the 4Runner therefore you cannot afford higher insurance rates. :D 4Runner owners save a lot on repairs so the privately owned companies know that you can spend that extra on insurance.

But isn’t that what the government wants, us to divide ourselves?

honestly, I don’t see that as a political statement, it’s accurate.

It was unnecessary and, based on the map he posted, inaccurate. The way you stop dividing people is to...stop using labels that divide people.

It could easily have been framed as states with more regulatory control tend to have lower rates without mentioning "red".

I agree that the way to stop dividing is to stop labels. I guess it shows how comfortable some of us have become to the red and blue state labeling, as I didn’t even pick up on it. But I still agree with the statement.

Yes that is just unnecessary. Justifying with the probability of natural disasters or local regulations is ok and understandable. People always had different political opinions, religions, traditions and way of life but the beauty of this country is that we could all put it aside to prosper and grow together.

I pay about $1400 on my 2019 4Runner a year, plus taxes every year here in CT. Yes i really like my 4Runner and am willing to pay.

Way too many variables for me to want to switch and figure it out.

Several reasons for increasing car insurance.
    From: https://www.forbes.com/advisor/car-insurance/car-insurance-rates-up-again/

“Car insurance premiums have surged by 22.2% over the past year, according to March’s Consumer Price Index figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, far outpacing the current inflation rate of 3.5%. Over the same 12-month period, car repair costs increased 11.6%, with maintenance and repair costs up 8.2%.
Premium costs are accelerating, with March’s 2.6% month-over-month jump in car insurance costs almost three times the size of February’s 0.9% rise, and 12-month increases exceeding 20% over the past four months–the largest increases since the 1970s. A Forbes Advisor analysis found U.S. drivers pay an average of $2,150 a year for full coverage car insurance.”

2024 Off Road. Perfect driving history. $1,380 with high deductibles in Florida. High rates here are in part because, 1) People drive like idiots, 2) Texting while driving is the norm not the exception, 3) People do not have enough sense to avoid parking in low lying areas that flood during storms, and 4) Shops here are charging up to $250 per hour for labor now.

We pay $1k a year for insurance on the 4R.

its about 15% less than the rate on a 2023 Subaru ascent.

Wish we have usage based rate.. I put on 300 miles per month.

If Toyota would quit adding all of these "features" that I don't want, that have to be repaired after an accident, we all would save money on insurance.
