Why don't many forum members put their location in their profile?

I am curious why many forum members do not put their location in their profile? In many threads it can be important information and helps responders provide better answers to questions. Is it a paranoid belief that someone might find them if they listed which city or state they live in? There is no disadvantage to providing this information, but there are definite advantages to do so. If you do not add your location to your profile, why do you choose to not to provide it?

 

I think it comes from a misunderstanding of privacy. People know that scammers use pieces of a person's personal info to attempt to build a complete profile. I think people just try to limit the amount of volunteered information about themselves.

Buuut, I agree that a general location is usually completely harmless, especially if you don't have other social medias giving other info to a potential scammer.

Pro Tip: Google your name, you'd be surprised what you can find. What's even more surprising is how effective Google is at removing those links if you ask them to do so.

 

I put SoCal I think. One dude got mad at me on FB so he copied and pasted my info from the other Runner forum because I said pedal pretenders are a scam.

 

I think a lot of people just want less of themselves "out there".

 

I'm the opposite. I have no problem exposing myself to the internet!

By asking this question you are telling us you've never had a negative encounter with a nutjob on the internet, in which case I'm glad for your sake. I don't go as heavily into PERSEC as some folks do, but I still try to make any evildoers have to work for it.

For assistance purposes, i think the state is good enough. It tells people what kind of physical area you live in. Just like giving your year and trim off the 4r you are asking about.

Some think showing your license plate, is super scary, let alone your location, god forbid. Same ones "blur" theirs out. Like i cant walk by your rig, and see it. Tin foil hat type shit. Others, just don't care to do it, or care if you know.

 

I tell people "Hey buddy, your crazy is showing. You might wanna tuck that back in!"

 

You are wrong, this is not misunderstanding but a good practice. Your pseudonymous profile contains identifiers, such as email address and passwords, that when inevitably leaked would allow linking across multiple datasets and result in a detailed profiling.

For example, on Site A you are Bob123 and on Site B you are Sam123 but both are linked to bobsam123@email address. A few years later site breaches result it subscriber data becoming public. Now anything posted of Site A can be linked with what is posted on Site B. This way if on Site A you DM your address and on Site B you posted about your watch collection, it is now possible to locate your watch collection online.

All joking aside, I bet a lot of users on this site don't know HOW to update their location. We had a discussion a few months ago about changing "New Member" under your name. People who had been on this site for years didn't know how to change it.

So here's some IT guidance: Click "You" in the top right hand corner of the screen, then "Personal Details". On that page, scroll down and fill out whatever info you want the people on this site to know about you.

 

He acts like exposing yourself to others is bad. Sheesh.

 

I don't know what the problem is either. I display my location loud and proud.

However, this is the interweb and I have been known to lie...

 

I'm not really sure how an opinion can be wrong, or how my opinion is wrong when you literally said exactly what I said, just worded differently.

 

I kind of have my location, ask Google which state is the most hated, I live in The Southwest area of said state.
