Where are the proper jack points on 5th generations?

So I will be picking up my ‘21 ORP in Charleston, SC and driving it back to NY next week. Just would like to get a head start on this basic issue that could arise on a road trip like this.

I saw someone mention on an unrelated off topic forum how much of a pain in the ass changing out tires are on 4runners. Everything from releasing the spare to jacking it up safely.

I found a vid showing how to release the spare. And while I can see why he said how annoying it is, it seems very doable once you see it.

I didn’t quite find a good vid on the proper jack points though. To be fair, I didn’t look that thoroughly. But if anybody has good insight to this, it’s you fine gentlemen. I understand obviously the manual will have whatever illustration it has, but I like to get a head start on stuff like this.

I also read some people complaining about the stock bottle jack. In your guys’ experience, would it be better to purchase a decent floor jack for the simple act of changing out a spare? Or is what they give us good enough.

 

I think the provided jack is fine. I believe the jacking points are shown in the manual.

 

Me personally, I jack it up anywhere on the frame, and on the rear diff if needed.

I just jack where ever there is solid metal. Frame, control arms, axle, whatever. The stock jack is adequate. Just remember if you plan on lifting, to buy a little piece of wood or something. Otherwise you'll be stranded with a jack that touches the frame and doesn't lift the vehicle. I've done that haha

 

The manual shows the points on page 497, including nice drawings.

Update: okay, the page is on the manual I downloaded from Toyota just recently.

 

They must have changed them since 2019.

 

I'm happy to see that Toyota recommends jacking on the axle. It makes me feel better about it.

 

I have used the stock jack to change the rear tire of a 3in lifted 2021 4R with 285/70r17s. Rear axle is the jack point. I had no issues what so ever. Easy peasy. (May be not too easy for me being a small guy tackling a heavy spare tire.)

How ever I don't know if that works on the front as the front jack point is the front frame. (Wonder if anyone has any experience using stock jack front.)

Haha I guess that’s true, huh. I have legitimately never had anything like that in my life. It didn’t even cross my mind.

 

Practice getting that dam spare down, its the hardest part of the whole deal.

 

Plus stash a cheap rain coat and sm. tarp or trash bag for the inevitable flat tire in the mud scenario.

 

& paper towels, rubber gloves and water to wash your hands (everything fits in the jack compartment, including the trash bag)

 

You’re saying in order to lay it down in the mud to stand and work off of when changing out the tire? Pardon the ignorance....

 

Yes partly. Wear the coat if it’s raining and the tarp for kneeling down to unhook the spare tire and the trash bag for putting the wet and muddy stuff in. Practicing in your driveway with a sprinkler next to you works.
Or have a coworker FF hose you down while you R&R your tire. Btw, that’s my own sense of humor.

 

I have nice 4x4 peace of wood right next to the jack and it helps when you need a little more rise for uneven surfaces

I've got my AAA card in my wallet. After 7 New England winters, I'd be amazed if my spare mechanism worked. I'm kind of afraid to even try it, my luck it'll get about halfway down before jamming up.

 

I’m hoping fluid film/ wool wax takes care of that concern. Southern Maine here.

I carry a couple 2x6s, and a couple 4x4s.
There have been times when I needed to lift, but the ground under the lifting point was low, tire in a rut, and not a good time to try and drive to a flat location.
I do prefer to change tires on a flat level surface, but that is not always possible.
I have installed front & rear steel bumpers, so my high lift bumper jack works fine. I still carry the wood, sometimes the jack needs a solid surface.
