So each time I top off fueling, my range would be an indicated 320 miles, i assumed it was the default range the computer has, lately it has changed to 302. My calculated mpg has always been pretty consistent around 16.5 and driving style hasn't changed recently. Truck has 4,500 miles

It’s a moving target depending on recent MPG. As others stated, around 300+.

Nobody seems to know the exact algorithm for the range calculation when you fill up. But the guess is that it’s something like an average MPG since the previous fill up multiplied by 19.5. (There’s a built in safety factor where when the empty light is lit there’s still about 3.5 gallons left in the tank, so 23-3.5= 19.5 gallons of usable “range”).

If you were getting 16.5 MPG then your Range could be estimated as 16.5 mi/gal x 19.5 gal = 321.8 miles.

If you were actually getting 15.5 MPG since last fill up, then Range = 15.5 x 19.5 = 302.3 miles.

Are you resetting your mileage calculator every fill-up or is that a running average since you bought it? You might be getting a lower MPG the last few tanks that is getting buried in the average.

If you hand calculate your MPG, or reset the meter every fill up, you can get a better idea of your recent MPG than a long running average.

Ok good to know! I know it's not accurate at all and I don't rely on it but I just thought it always defaulted to 320 so was concerned that the number changed

Mine keeps going down. I get OCD about it, I can't help but keep doing the math and adding my distance traveled to my DTE to see how I'm doing between fillups.

Last tank was 368, right now the math has me at 378. I used to easily get over 400.

It's always worse in winter, and adding true AT tires and skids/sliders did me no favors.

    Kyx nerfbars, TRD roof rack.
Mine always drops lower when we go drive slow on the beach in 4hi. The beach is just under 10 miles I think.

Today it was a balmy 39 degrees and I averaged 22.1 on my trip home. Since I have gotten the 4runner its been below freezing… and I have been averaging about 18-19 MPG. I drive 90% highway. I use the trip meter/gallons at fill up to determine MPG. I like the “MPG since start”feature on the DIC - give you the average for your current drive. My ranges are usually as indicated above - about 320-340 miles. Usually fill up 1-2 ticks below a quarter and thats usually around 310 miles.

I am sorry but I do not believe that Toyota would use a "type" of rubber that the neck tube is made out of, that gasoline would cause it to dry rot.

My Honda dealer and friend who services my Accord told me to stop at first click also. He said it can mess up some type of filter in the neck.

it’s good advice how much further are you going to go with a few extra clicks

My range is a thin line between true rage and denial - gas hit 6$/gal at costco.

It’s made of steel. The reason you don’t overfill it so you don’t gag your evap canister.

That sounds about right. It’s about $1.42 per liter CAD in Windsor Ontario and there are 3.78 liters roughly in a gallon.

It was $3.58 USD per gallon on the Detroit side of the border yesterday.

Sad times for sure and that fuels our inflation.

Wow. $6 Canadian is like $4.75 US. My local Bay Area Costco is $4.20. And that’s the cheapest anywhere around here. I often see people topping off their tanks there. As Landcruiser said, that’s a good way to kill your evap canister.

Looks like there’s a bill in the US Senate to postpone the federal gasoline tax for the rest of 2022. That’s 18 cents per gallon. Maybe some states will give us a tax break too. Fingers crossed.

Filled up tonight at the ole Costco crazy train. Always a ton of cars and long wait.
It came back at 407. Id never paid attention to that so no clue if that’s what its been or not.

weird mileage lately. My drive to and fro work almost 50 miles from each way and consistent. Last two weeks it’s been colder than a well diggers crack here and my mileage dropped 2-3mpg and could do nothin in driving habits to bring up. This past week it warmed up a touch and it raised. Seems odd to me. Would have thought colder air it’d do better but suppose computer and MAF have some algorithm that did it…

Avg computer MPG is 21.6. Avg is over about 7,500 miles

That makes sense. I have the same experience. Mine drops all winter when it's cold, and then comes back up in the spring. I don't think the denser cold air helps much compared to how much longer it takes for the engine to warm up. Also, all the fluids are thicker and add more resistance when they're cold.

I picked up my new SR5 yesterday and the tank as filled by the dealer read 408 to empty. But at the time it had 11 miles on it. After driving it home and out for a little drive I was all the way up to 35 miles, at MPG AVG of 20.1 But that was some pretty casual driving as I was still learning the various controls, especially iCarPlay and Sirrius audio:

It's the activated carbon filter for the EVAP system that can get messed up if you overfill. The system basically has an air pump that pulls the gasoline vapors off the headspace in the tank. You can sometimes hear the little pump kick on a few hours after you shut down the vehicle.

Winter blend gas lowers mpg a hair To I believe. My 2001 Tahoe seems to be a flat 10 mpg winter and 13 mpg summer. It hurts these days averaging $3.65 a gallon for 87 here. Granted a few 5 min warm ups here and there when 15 or below, and taking forever to get up to temp she drops.

Being brand new, I hope my range stays this way and is close to accurate! Just filled up and was waiting in line at the car wash (for the reason it says 8 mpg)
