What tires are you running on your TRD Pro?

New 2022 TRD PRO owner. 2nd time 4Runner owner. Not loving the Nitti Grapplers. They feel a bit too...squishy. I do intend to do some mild off roading and camping etc but most of my driving will be on highways and on some gravel roads around where I live. This is not my daily driver. My brother wants my tires for his Tacoma, so I was looking to see what tires others are using currently that have a decent rugged look but offer a bit of a better ride/steering experience on their 4 Runner. Thinking all terrain vs a straight off road model. I'm looking to go same size, not planning on a lift.

I like the Bridgestone H/L Alenzas or the ALenza AS ULtra, the Dueller HTs, the BStone Dueller A/T Revo 3.

Suggestions and recommendations are welcome. Thanks!!

 

All you mentioned are definitely on the milder side of functionality. If you want something on par with Nittos that it came with, BFG KO2, Cooper ST Max, General Tire Graber ATX, Falken Wildpeak A/T3W and many others.

What matters are these things. What will you do with it primarily?

Daily driver
Dirt/sand/gravel
Mud/clay
Snow/ice

Choose one category that fits what they will do primarily and go from there.

What do you mean by "squishy"? What psi are you running currently?

And FWIW, I am not a Nitto fan either. Too big of a FanBoy presence for me. I ran them on two Expeditions I had. Not my liking.

I sold the Nittos and got Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac 265/70R17. They are very good in snow but I don't like the tire noise and its not grippy as BFG KO2 LT265/70R17 Load C offroad.

@tekman, I would open the question up to all trims that come with 17" wheels, if you want more input.

The stock tires are SL rated, they're supposed to be softer. Going with a C or E rated model will stiffen the ride and be more durable when offroad.

Mainly highway driving 80%. Dry pavement.

Not a daily driver, just a weekend driver for me.

When I say squishy, they feel like a soft sidewall and a bit too much sway for me when I drive around corners or round about or even when getting pushed around a bit in higher winds. I have owned mostly SUV's since the early 90's and in my 4th gen I didn't feel that sway with the Duelers I had on there.

 

oh and running 34 PSI on all tires presently.

 

That’s a suspension problem…

 

Faulken Wildpeak AT is what I have on the 4R and so far so good. On a 2017 Tacoma we have the K02's and I still think the Faulken are better all around. They weren't cheap though from what I can remember now.

 

I'm more interested in hearing about the effects of changing the tires on the Pro as it has different shocks than say the SR5 or the limited.

Could include TRD Offroad and Sport as I think they have the same suspension and shocks, etc.

 

MICHELIN Defender LTX similar to the tires you listed but better

 

My brother has K02's and I drove it this weekend and they felt big as in when turning it just felt odd driving it on the highway with such a knobby tire. Pretty loud too.

 

I doubt it since it's literally brand new.

Soft suspension. Toyota knows most just go to the mall with these so the suspension is tuned soft for that purpose. They are all like this, even the Pro Bro.

 

whatever dude, the Nitto's are garbage tires. Toyota gets them for pennies and they are sh!t. I'd rather put on something I trust and like than use crappy tires. Tires do make a big difference. I upgraded my F150 to a set of Michelins and the entire truck ride changed for the better and improved my gas mileage.

 

I run the BFG KO2 C (265/70R-17) on my daily driver TRD Off-Road Premium and they’re great at 35 psi. Good on the highway, great on the trail, decent in deep Northern MI snow. Mine are not noisy at highway speeds but they do pack up easily & fling mud & stones when you get back on the pavers which is why I’m keeping my mud guards. Ran the E-rated 35’s on my Jeep and they were STIFF. I will keep buying this tire.

Theres virtually no difference. Were trying to tell you. I went from Grandma tires to Falkens with TRD wheels and my difference on-road was negligible. You are already running the Nitto's. On-road...... The only difference you're going to notice is if you go to a strict mud tire, in which the audible noise will be different. Michelin defenders may give you a little mote compliance but they wont fix your suspension issues.

And BTW the Nitto only show its bad side when you go off-road. The compounds and treads of the other tires really start to show in performance. Otherwise on-road Nobody really complains.

I"m not looking for a knobby off roading tire. I'm looking for something more All Season. I would say you're correct if I put on a very similar style tire, but that is not the plan.

 

I'm liking the look of these.

I'm liking Defender LTX at/2 and the LTX M/S. both look like good options.

 

The terra grapplers are great tires, idk what you're on about..

 

I wouldn't say it's soft, the stock sr5 and OR suspension... that's soft.
