I would like to know what GPS enabled device you use for navigation. I use GAIA GPS software and had an iPad PRO with GPS. Unfortunately it was stolen and I now need a new GPS device. So I would like to know what device you like to use for navigation when outside of cell phone coverage.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Yes that works until you are out of cell phone coverage.

I use an iPad with GAIA as well, and my phone when I don’t need the iPad. You can download entire regional map areas of where you’re going so you can use all the features once out of cell service.

Not if you use ONX or Gaia, which both work with Android Auto while offline.

ON-X or Gaia. Both are a yearly paid.

And i love ON-X, and used Gaia for 2 years. Both are great.

EDIT- as far as the device. Use what ever you have, or like. (apple or android) they work the same.

Garmin Overlander. Like the screen. Can't get used to looking at my phone.(Really I'm a smart phone dum dum). Gave serious thought to mounting an I-pad,

thought it would take up too much room.

I use an iPhone app called Here WeGo. I have maps of the western US downloaded via the app onto my phone. As the iPhone is fragile, I keep a backup in the car. A Garmin GPSMap 66i handheld, which has the InReach satellite locator integrated. And it’s ruggedized, unlike the iPhone.

But I think paper maps shouldn’t be discounted. There’s something very satisfying about stopping on the trail someplace where the view is nice, making a cup of tea, and spreading the map out on your hood to contemplate your next move. Or maybe taking a short hike to brush up on map-and-compass skills. Paper maps have a lot of advantages. They don’t require cell service or batteries. They let you choose your own route. They let you see features that you might otherwise miss with a GPS. Sure, they don’t show you traffic or give turn by turn directions, but those features are useless on the trail anyway.

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
100% this. Don't trek anywhere without downloading maps in advance, just in case.

Just popped my cherry this weekend on a forrest family vacation with my first 4Runner (2010), and downloaded Gaia. This was based on a TrailRecon YT channel review and I paid for the premium $60/yr premium subscription. Hey, Gaia need to make money too! My family and I did a relatively simple 11 mile forrest road trek today and it worked flawlessly. What I really like is you can easily combine multiple layers in the app, and setup routes on a regular web browser which will automatically push to your app.

I’m hoping there’s searchable routes based on difficulty which you can look for, based on your location. It’s an awesome app.

On X Offroad has color coded routes corresponding to difficulty. Works with Android Auto and Apple Car Play.

I have the factory in the 4Runner but put a Garmin in my wife's RAV$.

    Garmin 010-02038-02 DriveSmart 65, Built-In Voice-Controlled GPS Navigator with 6.95” High-Res Display , Black

Installed it with a USB cord and an IPhone vent mount!

Garmin 66i handheld with Inreach. It has the Topo maps for the Western States on a micro SD card. If I need to leave the 4Runner for any reason, I have it with me along with a go-bag.

How has your experience been using this when travelling? Clarity of instructions, route suggestions, traffic display etc.
I need a dedicated GPS beyond my phone and Garmin seems to be the only hardware available.

Pretty good. We use the 4Runner for trips but the RAV4 with the Garmin has been pretty easy to use. A little confusing because it is different from the OEM and the procedures are a little different.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
I use GAIA on a dedicated $89 after-Xmas-sale Samsung 8” tablet from Costco….. works good (IPhone as backup). The RAM mount hardware almost cost more than the tablet……lol.
If it gets stolen I won’t cry too much.

3yrs ago I bought myself and my son a 5yr subscription to the basic GAIA for $50ea through a backpacking website. I am not looking forward for the renewal $ after reading your post.
My son broke down and he relayed his exact location to my GAIA maps…..paid for itself that day.

Ipad Mini running Gaia linked to a Garmin Inreach Mini through bluetooth.

The combo has been flawless over 3600 miles of wandering in the last 2 years.

Since I am normally solo, the Inreach Mini SOS function is a must-have IMO.
