Hi! Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. My 2005 4 Runner started making a weird noise this week..it sounds like chimes but not pretty. It only does it when the vehicle is in drive and the brakes are applied. It does not make the noise when it is in reverse with the brakes applied and it does not make the noise when in park. My husband thinks it's the transfer case. Just looking for more info. Thank you!

Like a ringing? Or, like a screeching? Could be brake squealers. :notsure:

Hard to guess without hearing it.

I don't think it is the brakes. They don't make noise at all when I am using them to slow down. No squeaking etc. Just when I am sitting there. And it isn't a constant noise...it starts and then stops and starts again. And it doesn't do it all the time. I was just hoping to not have to go to the mechanic without kind of an idea of what is going on and get taken cuz I am a girl. Lol! Thank u!

    Welcome.

Like said above, it's one of those sounds that's hard to say without hearing. But with your description, the oddity is being in drive only. Does this happen in "D" or also in "1" and "2"?

The brakes are singular and on or off. Basically compressed or not. So they would squeak anytime they are engaged in theory, no matter what the tranny is doing.

Does it matter if the a/c is on or off? Thinking a squeaking belt of bad bearing in a pulley maybe.

It's possible is could be a heat shield around an exhaust component has come loose and is vibrating/ratting, it's a common noise making item that happens on some vehicles especially in the rust belt states....BUT as mentioned it's very hard to say without you posting a video or sound clip of the noise.

^^^ This. The description of a bad sounding chime leads me to think it's a heat shield also.
