    Hello,

I own a 2000 4Runner and I've had it for over a decade. It was my first car at 16 and I am now 28. I currently have 320,000 miles on it. It has the original motor and transmission. Its hard to kill this thing. I will be finishing up 4 years of my military service in December, and would like to go on a "Tour of the West" next summer. Is this possible to do with my vehicle? Or am I just asking for a headache?

    Whats everyones thoughts on this?

First, deep respect & gratitude for your service.

My ‘07 is at 245K. I wouldn’t hesitate to take the trip you’re planning, but I do much of the work on it. That gives me confidence that it’s in the best possible condition and I’ve also done some preventative care such as rebuilding the starter. You’ve had your truck for many years so I assume you know it well and maybe wrench on it too. Is a solid daily driver? If there’s nothing that worries you day to day, the only difference with the trip and every other day is that the side of the road is farther from home.

I have a couple of things in the truck, a spare serpentine belt, a coupling to span a busted coolant hose, and a metric socket set for example, to prepare for the things that can leave you stranded.

Finally, good planning and resources will help a lot. for example. And spending the money to have a trusted mechanic do a trip inspection might be worthwhile.

Hope you will update eventually on what you decided to do and how it went. All the best in the new chapter of your life.

Get a check-up/tune-up, check your tires. Then go have a adventure.

I drove from San Francisco to New Jersey and back in my 97 4runner over the summer. If the vehicle starts the trip in good shape, it'll reach the end too (assuming you don't get in an accident). Recommend you start each day checking your fluids to make sure you wont go hundreds of miles on low.
