Waiting on 2025 but need a vehicle now

I currently have a leased vehicle that expires in May 2024
I doubt the new 2025 4Runner will be ready by then so should I ...
1. Buy a 2024 4Runner and trade it in for a 2025 4Runner when it comes out? and take a big financial hit or
2. Buy a random older used vehicle and keep it for 6 mon- 1year until the 2025 is ready? Another financial loss or
3. ???

Any suggestions?

 

Option 2, if you’re going for a 2025. Option 1 if you’re going to keep the 5th gen.

 

Personally, I would not buy a new vehicle the first year it is introduced, not even a Toyota. When a new model is introduced, it often has issues that crop up that get remedied in subsequent model years.

Is there the possibility of extending your current lease for a year to two, and maybe at a lower rate, since the company has likely already earned back their investment?

 

I was originally aiming for Gen 6, but I needed a new vehicle sooner. I'm glad I went for the '23, and I'd probably be just as happy with whatever the '24 turns out to be as long as it keeps the current engine. Likely Gen 6 engine changes scared me off.

 

Buy a used 2019 or earlier and never look back.

 

Can you afford to buy your current lease? If you can, and its mechanically sound, I'd buy it rather than rolling the dice on someone else's maintenance

 

Lease a 2024 for 2 or 3 years and then get yourself a new 4Runner. By then most of the bugs will be worked out of it.

 

You will never regret a 4Runner, be it the last model year of the one generation or the first model year of the next generation. There is some built-in safety in that decision.

Having said that I am in a similar boat of whether I want to get in line for a manual 4th gen Tacoma next year, wait for the 2025 4Runner the year after or just hold off for multiple years.

This is exactly what I would do, I just dont trust first year models.

 

Sure, but you may get unintended/unneeded results/features. Like poor CarPlay integration and not so great LED's that you could do far better going with DD/BD LED's and an aftermarket head unit and speakers.

I'm also not a fan of the safety nanny systems in 2020+. But that's just me.

 

Where did you find that apple carplay doesn't work well? I use it literally every day and find it works perfectly. Mine is 2023, so maybe its a problem in 2021, 22 but first time I am hearing it.

See what your financial levels at and what's in the market then.

I agree with this assessment. My first thought though, would be to just buy an inexpensive used car (maybe even a beater) that will last you a couple years.

 

I agree. My 2019 SR5 Premium is the best of about 20 4WDs I've owned or driven.

Don't overthink this. Things can change over the coming months and your wants and needs could also change, Roll with the wave!

 

You might see if your current lease could be extended for 6 months, might be a possibility and would fit with your plans.

I did not "need" a new car right now but for some years I expected to let go of my Porsche and get a mid-sized SUV (getting old and more practical). I looked at everything, finally settled on a '23 TRD OR. I did not want to wait to see what a Gen 6 '24 or '25 4R would look like, I actually was more motivated to get a Gen 5 while I could.

 

I also don't like intrusive safety systems, but I think the concerns about 2020+ are overblown. They have lane departure warning and brake alert (woth possibly some emergency braking support). Both can be turned off and left off, and the braking warning is adjustable. With these, you also get adaptive cruise control, if that interests you.

2021+ gets blind spot monitoring too, which is nice, even though the 4R has pretty good visibility (every little bit helps).

 

Honestly I like blind spot monitoring, and don't mind lane departure as long as it's defeatable.

On a 12 hour trip behind the wheel of my gf's car a few years back, I grew to appreciate the BSM.

 

absolutely! I have a camera in my other (tesla) vehicle and I much prefer the bsm with 4R.

 

I just sold my 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, I'm going to be driving my wife's Corolla as my personal vehicle now. I am going to 100% put some money away and wait for the new 6th gen to come out!

 

If I go back to a 4runner Pro it will be a 24. I will not buy a new redesign till it’s at least 3 years old.

 

I was asking myself the same thing back in the summer of 2020, when I was six months away from needing a new vehicle and assuming the 6th gen 4Runner would come out in 2022. I can't believe nothing has changed! Anyway, if you like the current 4Runner, just get one, and don't worry about the future. I still love mine and feel okay about it holding its value if I decide to upgrade some day.

 

The 2024 will be a great vehicle, I don't think the 2025 will be. Be careful with those first year new designs

 

You're assuming you're going to like the 2025 4Runner. And we're also assuming there's even going to be one. Toyota was going to axe the Land Cruiser, but then built one based off of the GX Platform (a 4Runner named Land Cruiser). Are they really going to have both a LandCruiser and 4Runner with the same dimensions? They seem like very similar cars. Who knows, but either way, what if they keep the 5th gen going for 2025? If you like the 5th Gen, get it, otherwise you're waiting for a car that may or may not exist, that you may or may not like.

I personally am loving my 5th gen, I like old school cars, and plan to keep it for a very long time.

 

How do you feel about paying a $10k market value adjustment? Because that's what will go along with every single scenario involving the 2025 if it is a new generation.

Absolutely don't buy a 2025, especially if it's the new 6th Gen 4R with new powertrain, new at least to the 4R itself. Don't be a foolish anxious guinea pig.
Like I say, very wisely, buy the best 2013-2019 you can find for your budget and taste. After 2020 you get gadgets and tech and dealership overlord control up the Ying Yang that many will come to terms with regretting. They'll tell you they love their MTM, grille cams, new keyless fobs, tech windshields, etc, untill they don't
