Just had a mechanic that very much "appears" to know his stuff, tell me that whatever people say online about these 4.7 engines possibly being blown up from timing belt failure is not actually possible as they are in fact NOT interferance(sp?) engines..

Is he full of it or what? Whats with the confusion on this topic.

Hoping for the facts from someone that indeed has had a motor apart and knows and not just parroting what theyve read elsewhere.

I've always heard that they were interference engines. Just looking on IH8mud, one comment said that "Toyota's literature states that the 2UZ in an interference motor." But, some say that the earlier, non VVT-I version was a non-interference motor. Maybe that's where the discrepancy is.

I certainly wouldn't rely on what one mechanic says, unless he's a Toyota master mechanic or something like that.

I think thats likely the answer and like you said where the descrepancy is. Perhaps the mechanic I was talking to had the older version apart and got the option they were all the same in that regard.

My question is why do you need to know.

I'd certainly not want to find out the hard way.

Trying to understand where the confusion lies is all.. some people like to search for the truth of the matter about topics.

You need a new mechanic, 2uz is an interference engine guy might have been mistaken if for the 5vz (1st gen Tacoma 3rd gen 4Runner v6) which is a timing belt non interference engine
