I am considering getting new tires and selling the ones that are on there. They are Dunlop ATs and they have about 30,000 miles on them. According to the guys at the dealership they have a tread life expectancy of about 40,000 miles (they were on the forerunner when I bought it new, and the guys at the dealership say the ones they put on the new vehicles are a little softer and we have a little sooner). So, they have about a fourth of their tread like left.(I will upload pictures when I get a chance)
In general, how much can I expect to get for the used tires? I am thinking that if I could get $50 tire, then I might go ahead and do it. Anything less than that, and I will just ride them out till the tread gets down the minimum ( Though I don't like doing that with tires in general).
Has anyone else ever done this and is it worthwhile?

I guess anything is possible, but I'd have to be pretty desperate to buy tires that are already 3/4 used up.

Wow "Dunlop ATs and they have about 30,000 miles". I thought that's closer to retirement in my eyes. But may be people who are selling their old 4runner and want to keep their good tires might put these old tires and sell.

You may find someone that will take them for free, but the price to remove them from your wheels to put them on another set of wheels (another person's) would be more than they are worth. If I were you, I'd pay the tire disposal fee. I'm not trying to be an ass, but tires with that much wear aren't worth money, maybe goodwill to someone in need?

As an example, I bought my 4R and asked three tire shop if they would give me a credit toward the purchase of new tires. They said the new tires, with 15 miles on them (mileage between the dealer and their shop(s)) weren't worth anything to them. They suggested selling four tires with <15 miles might net me $300 on CL. I went to the lowest priced tires shop and paid the disposal fee rather than deal with the yahoos on CL. I imagine if they only had 10k miles left on them, they'd have sat at my house until the end of times.

Good luck with that! Many pull them off immediately after purchasing their 4R and only sell them for $400-$500 for the set. I sold mine with 32 miles on them for $400. If you're lucky you might find someone desperate enough to pay $25 each. It doesn't hurt trying but I can't imagine many looking for tires with such little life left because it's not really worth the cost to mount and balance tires that won't last much longer.

I doubt you could get anything for them. The right shop might take them and keep them around flor someone that comes in and can't afford a tire, but I doubt they'd give you anything for them

I plan on taking mine off this fall with maybe only 10k on them. Ill probably sell all five for $125 (including the steel spare wheel).

Thanks for all the feedback. Tells me what I need to know. I'll just ride on these until they get a little closer to end of life and then just put then just put the new ones on.
    I appreciate the responses.

Drive your tires down and replace them when needed.

If you want new tires, get new tires. No sense in driving around on crap tires if you don't have to.

The 265/70/17 size is really common, I could see someone with a beater GM truck needing to pass inspection giving you a hundred bucks for them. But is it worth the trouble for a hundred bucks?

I was chatting with a 4Runner YouTuber about tires a while back, his strategy is to sell his K02s at half life while they're still worth something.

My local DT gave me $50 each for the Dunlops when they had 3k on them. 30k? I would have had them dispose of 'em.

Agreed. I got paid $50 each for my factory Dunlops with 350 miles on them when my 4Runner was new and I couldn't wait to get rid of the factory tires. I have not regretted it.

I would say not. That is why I was trying to gauge if I could get $200 for the set. I think the consensus is no.

The thing is, I wouldn't say they're crap tires. Overall, I like them, but I have settled on what I want next and if I could essentially get $200 off my next set I would go ahead and pull the trigger.

I sold my Dunlops with 1300 miles on them for $100 for the set, and I felt bad about it. The Dunlops are probably suitable for being shredded into asphalt, but nothing else.

I wouldn’t buy someone’s used tires with 30,000 miles on them. But someone might.

I did sell mine with like 100 miles on them for $500

You're posting a question, you got a BLUF answer back and you're choosing to be rude, I don't know what you expected.

Used tire shops get theirs for less than what you're looking for, and the only shot at getting the price you want is if those tires didn't have 30,000 miles on them.

I upgraded my tires and rims before I took delivery. Salesman asked if I wanted the stock rims/tires, I just told him to keep them. Wasn’t worth the hassle at the time.

You asked if you should try to sell mostly-worn tires. I simply suggested no, finish them off and then replace them. Trying to be helpful, dude.

We sold our "factory" tires with 6 miles on them back to the dealership for $300, we were glad to get rid of them, and put the money towards our new tire choice. As far as you getting the $ you're wanting for used tires.... good luck. Run those Dunlops till they are gone, then make the decision what tire you want to try, maybe another set of Dunlops.

I sold my dunlops with 400 miles on them for $300. It took a few weeks on craigslist but I was glad they were finally out of the garage.

@authordaniel , how much tread is left? And how do they look, overall? That might be more important than the actual mileage. I don't think you'd get $200, but you can try.

If you want new tires, and have the cash, I'd just get them and then list the tires for sale, and take what you can get for them.

Or, just have the tire shop junk them for you, and be happy because you got the tires you wanted. :notsure:

So, the decision has been made for me. Went in for an oil change, and since the front left tire have been running 2 pounds low, and as an aside every quick Tripp store in Charlotte has an air compressor, but NONE of them work so I couldn't get the tire pumped up to match the other three myself. Yes, I have a compressor, but it doesn't reach the front tires when plugged into the power port in the back (have since ordered and received an extension from Amazon). In checking the tire that was a little low, they found three, count them three, nails, and one of them was in the sidewall so of course that tire can't be patched. Rather than buying one tire to replace that one when I'm 10,000 miles or less away from a new set anyway, and because I don't want to drive for too long without a usable spare, I'm gonna go ahead and get my new set next week.
I despise lazy people who leave hazards like that lying around on streets or in parking lots, not caring who it's going to affect.

Well, there you go. I had a similar experience, although my oem tires only had about 3000 miles on them. I got a socket set wrench bit embedded in my tire from somewhere. I could actually hear the air escaping. A quick trip to Discount Tire resulted in discovering a tire that could not be repaired. Like you, I opted for a new set instead of replacing one tire. I got a set of Falken Wildpeaks, and traded in the other 4 Dunlops, and got a random brand tire for the spare.

What is the recommendation for mostly street/highway tires that is good on road noise, life and grip.
