Did a tire rotation today and noticed one pad per side in the front has worn more then its counterpart which still has plenty of life left. 2019 with 40,000 miles, no vibration or pulling while braking.

I perform the majority of the maintenance on the vehicle but had the local dealer exchange brake fluid a few months ago and they told me front pads were down to 4mm. Thought that was strange as I have a very short commute with zero stop and go.

Anyone else have this issue? In searching I did not find much other then some premature brake pad wear with less then 40,000 miles. Not too much on stuck calipers for the 5th gen either. Any advice or experience is appreciated.

    Thank you.

in spring I do "spring maintenance", and one item on my list is complete cleaning of all brakes. try it.

    What exactly do you clean?

I usually pull and lube the top pins but that’s it.

5th gens have 4-pistons calipers correct? Does it have slide pins, or just locating pins for the pads.

kinda sounds like at least one of the pistons is seized in each caliper is seized. Unless they are exceptionally dirty and the little tracks for the pads are packed in with dirt.

Thanks for the replies. I found it strange that one pad per front caliper was worn compared to the other. Of course, I forget if it was inner or outer pad on each side. Anyway it could be a problem with a master cylinder?

My experience over the years on pretty much every vehicle is that the two pads on a particular wheel have always worn unevenly. Inside pads seem to go more quickly. I don't know the reason, but I don't get too worked up over it if everything is working. My current 2019 has the original front pads (about 110k miles), and I replaced the rears at around 90k with maybe 2-3mm left.

Looking at the thicker pad in each caliper I would have no problem going another 40,000 miles. But thats not going to happen with the worn pad on each side. My truck sees a good amount of dirt and trails but still think 40k miles is too early for caliper issues.

Usually only one hydraulic line goes into each caliper. I don’t see how a master cylinder could cause that.

i think single piston calipers are prone to wear more on one side than the other. Sometimes it’s just because of the slide pins. But the front calipers have two hydraulic pistons per side. I’d expect those to wear more evenly.

Check the slid pins and see if any are sticking. Remove them, clean them and regrease.

No slide pins on front calipers because it has pistons on both sides.

Can anyone confirm caliper bolt torque spec for a 2019 model year 4Runner?

137 ft lbs or 91 ft lbs?

    Thank you!
