Where can I find a replacement undercarriage plate? Mine is rusting and I am looking for a replacement. Any idea what this is called? I appreciate your help!

Fuel tank skid plate. Personally, I would just sand and paint.

Going good so far. I own two 4Runners and these skid plates are driving me crazy. I don’t want to paint over the rust and I can’t find the exact part for replacement. Thanks for reaching out.

I was afraid of that. Any ideas on what type of paint?

    This
    https://por15.com/products/3-step-stop-rust-system?msclkid=9f13fd4c6949199714659e457bc813f0

    Or this
    https://steel-it.com/products/epoxy-topcoat

I've used the POR 15 with mixed results. The "protective" coat went on beautifully. Skid plates look like a pro did the job. Nice, smooth and shiny. Super proud of myself doing those.

I did not top coat my skids as they (hopefully;)) never see sunlight. Sunlight will cause the POR-15 protective coat to eventually chalk. The "top coat" (i.e. paint) will prevent the chalking. I had to put that top coat on my sliders. However, those are full of brush marks. The silver paint was very difficult to work with. Looks O.K. from 6 ft., but if you get close....

I am not very proud of the sliders.

My nephew, who has friends that are into off road racing, swears by the Steel It. He says it holds up better than POR-15, and says the increased cost is worth it.

EDIT: I had originally rattle canned the sliders. 5 coats of primer and paint was salt blasted away to bare and rusty metal in 3 snowstorms..

These forums are so awesome. I appreciate the expert advise on these crafty little projects. Good to hear I’m not the only one with these issues. Thanks for the product recommendations. I will definitely take the plate off and see how much “fun” I can get into.

Too many..... Performance: • Magnusum Supercharger • Gibson exhaust with dual black tip • Pedal Commander * PowerBrakes • Suspension – Old Man Emu BP-51 front and back with Medium load coils • Tires: AT3 Faulken Wildpeak – 285/70/17 • Wheels: Relations Race Wheels, RR7-H with -12 offset • Full roof rack and ladder by Westcott Design (removed the stock Yakima basket) • Molle storage panels by Rago fabrication • Front light brackets by Rago • Illuminator light bracket by Rago (roof rack location) Lights • Morimoto front and back with sequential signals • Morimoto fog lights and side mirrors with sequential signals • 40” Baja design light bar for roof rack • 20” S8 Baja design driving combo (winch location) • Squadron sport baja design ditch lights • S2 Chase lights by baja designs (mounted on roof) In the bay: • Odyssey 34-PC Battery • SDQH Aluminum billet battery terminals and bracket • Switch Pro 9100 with aluminum tray • Anytime front and back camera • ARB twin compressor Recovery & Protection: • Smittybilt X20 synthetic rope winch • Factor 55 fairlead and flatlink • Southern Style Off-road (SSO) low profile bumper • SSO stage 2 high clearance wings • Weekend warrior recovery kit by treaty oak • RCI – skid plates – entire vehicle + catalytic converter protection wings Interior: • Nano Ceramic IR – Avery Dennison Window tint – all windows • Several phone mounts • Upgraded Rear Hatch lift gate struts (ladder is heavy) • Boom blaster horn switch (featuring La cucaracha)
I think RCI might have one of the gas tanks plates that was blemished for sale.

My case....I needed to add a diff drop kit...so removed the stock front plate...which was rusted as well....then, my neighbor got his catalytic converter stolen a few months ago....so I said, I might have to look at these wings for protecting these two cats. As you see, one thing let to another one...and then buying one piece here and there wasn't effective, so i bought the entire set. And I hate spending money this way....I only wanted to spend 300 bucks...ended up spending over 1000 by the time it was all set and done. I am happy though...full protection underneath and now I won't hesitate if I go through rough conditions. But man, a chunk of change out.

    I took the attitude that:
    1) The 4R sits relatively high, which makes it a prime candidate for caty converter theft.
    2) Inconvenience of not having my 4R while repairs are being done.
    3) Out-of-pocket expense.
    4) Buy caty converter protection (i.e. skid plate) so it won't be stolen..... again.

You eliminated step 2 and 3, and greatly reduced step 1, by installing skids.. Yeah, step 4 is spendy, but you would have gone there anyway after your cat was pilfered. Think of the skids as caty theft insurance.

If the mongrels really want it, they will get it regardless, but it will take a lot more effort.

See if you can reach out to this guy. He just replaced his factory skids with OEM due to the same problem, rust.

I’ve never seen rust that bad. Luckily I live in the desert.

There is 47 billion people that make all the under protection for your rig. And then some (lower control arms, the shit goes on for days) You can go full ham, and replace em all, or remove your fuel tank one (the one thats scaring you) wire wheel/brush it, and spray it, put it back on. Or, break out the card, and replace them all, front to rear, appetite to asshole. Either way, cheers mate
