I purchased my 4runner in June , not because I needed another vehicle, but because I wanted one. My wife was going to sell her convertible but decided to keep it. So her cars have the garage and mine sits outside. I have a company truck so the 4runner sits in the driveway 90% of the time. I have been thinking about a cover for it, does anyone have any experience with one? There are several available and they aren't expensive, but I don't know what the long term usage would do to the paint.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
The only issue you may have is this:
    • It holds onto moisture. Breathability is important when choosing a car cover. Although a fully waterproof cover may be needed for certain months of the year, water-resistant material is perfectly suitable for most cars. Waterproof covers risk trapping moisture inside. Unable to evaporate, the accumulated moisture contributes to rusting, corrosion and may attract mold or mildew.

The only experience I’ve had with the car covers I’ve tried has been negative.

My advice would be call California car cover. They have tons of covers and are well versed. I have one from them for indoor winter protection just as extra protection. These are all custom fit for the 4Runner also with motor pockets and perfect fit. Very good quality stuff.

I am sure some are much better suited for outdoor use.

My 4R is parked outside as well and I purchased a car cover for it. I don’t use it all of the time but it has worked well. I have a Prinsu full roof rack and my cover fits over it as well. This is the cover I bought from Amazon. It is water proof and is a heavier weight cover.

Skip the car cover and just take care of the car. Car covers for indoors are fine, but outside you run the risk of getting things trapped underneath the cover and doing bad things. Tint the side windows, if legal. Get a good sun blocker for the windshield (Heat Shield; Weather Tech) and maintain the paintwork.

Tinted, blocked and ceramic coated, but the birds love white and with the dry weather it's constantly dust covered. Maybe I should sell one of the wife's cars so I can park in the garage.

If your truck is white, a cover is the least of your worries.

If you've done all that, you're more than fine. If you want to do something about the birds, get one of those "owl-crow" deals. Cheaper and safer than a cover.

Or just sell one of the cars without the wife knowing!

I have had good luck with a Covercraft Sunbrella. Remember covers are only meant to go onto clean cars.

Being a former resident of the PHX area, we know that a car cover is a baaaaaad idea!
