Transmission delay issues

Hello, I have an 06 4.0 v6 4runner with 4x4. I recently had an issues with my transmission, I'll link to that post.
I had an issue after a neutral safety switch replacement that landed me in the trans shop. When I got it back i had a new issue; When shifting from park to drive there is a 3-7 second delay before the vehicle actually engages into drive. I had two shops look at it and no one know why this is happening. Someone suggested that it could be an internal hydraulic leak and that its taking some time to build pressure to actually engage.
I was quoted $4k for a new used trans or $4k for a rebuild.

Everything still shifts fine, everything else works fine. I bought a truck for work and unfortunately need to sell the 4runner. I'm trying to replace the trans for way less than $4k.

All of that being said, Ive called every junk yard near me and only one of them have a 4runner and its a 2003. The Junk yard is telling me the 03 trans won't work with the 06 but I believe they are in the same generation so i wanted to see if anyone has any insights on how to fix the trans or if I can swap in the 03 trans.

edit* It was quickly answered that the 03 will infact not work, still looking for any advice or suggestions on finding a new trans or suggested fixes/ causes for the delayed issue

At this point how much are you really saving as is? KBB says its worth around $7k. I would just sell it as is and maybe some mechanic will pick it up for a decent amount.

The 03 still used the 4speed auto, while the 06 has the 5 speed.

The 5 speed replaced the 4 speed in 05.

 

Just to clarify, the 2003 and 2004 V6 engines both had the 4 speed, but the 2003 and 2004 V8 engines had the 5 speed, albeit the 2003 V8 5 speed was not a sealed transmission, had a dip stick and use different ATF than the later 5 speed, and as mentioned from 2005 and onward all engines had the sealed 5 speed transmission, the only other difference is if it's a 4X4 or 2WD, it's still the same transmission...BUT the tail piece of the transmissions are different, so if you have a 4X4 you need a transmission from another 4X4, or if 2WD....etc., etc., etc.

Couldn't agree more. You're never going to get your money back by making a major repair to an older vehicle you're ready to sell. Mechanics and hard core DIY people tend to like projects and probably have the ability to source a used transmission as a replacement or to fix the existing one cheaper than you can. Rather than spending $4K to fix the transmission (which could turn into a mess if the fix doesn't work out well) and asking $8-$9K for the vehicle, I'd disclose the issue and price it at $5K to give the seller some financial room to fix it.
