Trade in just because of headroom?

I currently have 2023 sr5 premium with around 10k miles. It’s great except the headroom with the sunroof is driving me crazy at 6’3. I’m considering trading it in for a similar used one without a sunroof. Only problem being it’s nearly impossible to find either a sr5 premium of off-road premium without sunroof. Also is it worth the potential loss?

It’s relatively easy to get with your dealer of choice and source an Off Road or Off Road Premium without a sunroof, not so sure about an SR5 Premium. From putting together build sheets to delivery was about a month and a half with my dealer. I’m only 6’ but didn’t want the sunroof for the same reason as well as leaking potential. In today’s market only you can answer the loss question but I wouldn’t hesitate while the market is still pretty good.

I think the best solution is to keep the driver seat in its lowest height and never be a passenger.

It's very hard to get features on a non sunroof model. My SR5 with no sunroof had 3rd row but no heated seats. I really love no sunroof not only for extra headroom but also for roof strength and protection from hail. No leaks and less heat is a plus too.

When I was looking for my next 4runner I was looking for no moonroof, no KDSS TRD ORP but heated seats was a must. No luck contacting multiple dealerships in 2018. At that time there were lot of 4runners in stock.

For my Limited and TRD Pro, no option not to have sunroofs. So living with it, pray that I don't get problems. (For my TRD Pro praying that I don't get problems again , leak was fixed under warranty)

But I'm a short guy, so it's not too bad for me...

    Oooh look, another mod.....

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm 6' 3" & I have the sunroof. I also had this problem in my Tacoma. What I did to resolve it: I lowered the drivers seat as low as possible. Now I have a few inches between the top of my head and the roof of the truck.

I may not have as much as I want, but it's a lot more than I had. Trading in SR5P for a lesser model won't get you all the space that you want. I think the sunroof only eats up like 2 inches of headroom?

    This is from Toyota's site:

Hey, we tall people encounter issues like this all the time. Learn to duck when stepping in and be thankful you aren't short. Those fuckers have it worse than we do!

Hardly a silver bullet but CarMax's search is the only one (that I have discovered to-date) that has the option to exclude specific criteria.

A lot of ex-rentals out there but excluding both SR5 trim and sunroofs ought to show you what they have. Sunroof-less *Premium models definitely exist technically but YMMV.

I just traded my 2022 Taco MGM manual transmission in on a second 2023 TRD 4runner without sunroof.
They gave me what I paid for the truck, and the 4runner was $2500 or so off MSRP
I lost money on the plates and the $1200 dealer fees on the truck. So $1600 down the drain. Drove it for over a year and it had 8000 miles on it.
I’d say get one you are comfortable in.

For some time now in the SF Bay area it is impossible to get any non-Premium OffRoad models, and all the ORPs I have seen come with moonroof.

Dealers all tell me they don't have a say in sourcing what you want since Toyota sends them whatever.

^My experience also. Took a lot of searching before I finally found a TRD Off-Road with no sunroof. It was used. No new ones available with no sunroof.

??? And why is that? You think that glass is any protection in a rollover?

I was an EMT/Firefighter for many years. In any rollover the glass shatters and now you've got nothing between you and the ground. I remember one wreck in particular because the vehicle flipped and then skidded down the highway on its roof for about 100 yards. The sunroof disintegrated and the driver, seat-belted in, was scalped - literally - right down to the bone when his head skidded down the pavement. The seat belt held him in the seat - but not tight enough to hold his upside down body from allowing his head to contact pavement. One of the reasons I'll never own a vehicle with a sunroof.

All kidding aside. I'm actually 6'7". I drive my 4runner with the seat all the way down and back and steering wheel pushed in as far as it will go. Really I thought the same at first best to have no moonroof for clearance. But I couldn't find an ORP without so accepting that it's my problem I purchased one with. Lo and behold I find I have more headroom with a moonroof because my head fits into the moonroof opening which affords me more clearance than a 4Runner without would. Just saying from a really tall guy as nothing is perfect at my size car or truck wise but I'm not regretting the moonroof for head clearance.

Just replace a couple of neck discs with some thin washers and you'll gain an easy inch of headroom.
